As reported by PR Newswire, joint research by ESA (Entertainment Software Association) and Circana has revealed that US gamers have spent $57.2 billion on gaming during the last year alone. The figure takes into account both hardware and software, DLC content, microtransactions, accessories, physical and digital game sales, and subscription purchases.
Overall, a staggering chunk of $48 billion out of the total was spent on “video game content” alone, as per the report. The rest of $6.6 billion went to hardware, and the other $2 billion was exhausted by gaming accessories and peripherals. Additionally, the figure saw an increase year-on-year by almost $1 billion. ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis has added his two cents while discussing the significance of the huge figure:
These figures reinforce the position of the video game industry as a growth engine for the United States economy. When combined with the fact that nearly two-thirds of Americans play video games regularly, cutting across all demographics and backgrounds, these results confirm the video game industry’s impact as an economic and creative powerhouse with far-reaching cultural influence,” said Stanley.
ESA mentions that digital download spending saw a 13% increase last year compared to 2022. An 11% increase in digital premium downloads on PC, Cloud, and non-console VR platforms has also been recorded.
