The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Is Now Playable In A Browser

Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind now runs in a browser through OpenMW, but players must import game files from a legitimate copy to explore Vvardenfell.

Story Highlights

  • A browser-based version of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is available through the OpenMW engine.
  • Players still need legitimate copies of Morrowind’s original game files.
  • The project offers a convenient way to run Bethesda’s classic RPG without a traditional installation.

Bethesda’s beloved 2002 RPG can now run directly inside a web browser, provided you already own the necessary game files. It’s playable through Virtastic’s OpenMW-Web project available on GitHub.

The browser version is powered by OpenMW, the community-built, open-source engine designed to modernize Morrowind and improve its compatibility with newer hardware. Players can load the RPG through a compatible browser instead of installing and launching it through the original executable.

You Still Need To Own Morrowind

This is not a free browser release of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The project currently offers two options:

  • An example world that ships with OpenMW.
  • Morrowind running through data files provided by the user. It doesn’t require uploading those files, as the API directly reads the files from disk.

The web-based engine only includes a demo, so players must provide the required files from a legitimate copy of the game. Once you have imported the files, the game will run just as it does locally on your PC.

A Convenient New Way To Explore Vvardenfell

Browser support removes some of the friction associated with getting a game from 2002 running on modern systems. Players can access OpenMW’s recreation without relying on the original engine, which has naturally accumulated compatibility problems over more than two decades.

The project is particularly interesting as a technical showcase. Morrowind is a massive, systems-heavy RPG filled with quests, NPC schedules, open-world exploration, and a famously unforgiving lack of hand-holding. Running that experience through a browser is considerably more impressive than launching a lightweight retro game.

No, Bethesda has not suddenly released Morrowind as a free web game. But for existing owners curious to see an all-time RPG classic working inside a browser tab, this OpenMW project is absolutely worth watching.
