Story Highlights
- Rockstar’s Rob Nelson tells YouTuber Davy Jones that GTA 6 is currently running at 30fps on console.
- Nelson says the studio hasn’t decided whether a 60fps option will be ready by launch.
- It’s unclear whether PS5 Pro will get any different treatment, Rockstar hasn’t said either way.
Rockstar’s own head of development just gave the clearest signal yet on GTA 6’s console framerate, and it isn’t the answer performance-focused players were hoping for.
Rob Nelson Confirms 30fps During Development
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, addressed the question directly during a visit from content creator Davy Jones, one of several creators recently invited to Rockstar North for a closer look at the game. According to a translated excerpt from Flow Games, one of the outlets that also attended:
According to Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second. According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future). He also emphasizes that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of Ray Tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30 FPS.”
That’s a meaningfully softer statement than a locked-in confirmation. Nelson is describing the game’s current state during development, not necessarily its final shipping configuration, and he’s explicit that the studio hasn’t settled internally on whether a 60fps mode will make launch.
PS5 Pro’s Situation Remains Unconfirmed

This is the part worth being careful about. The gameplay shown during Rockstar’s Netflix Extended Look was captured specifically on a base PlayStation 5, and Nelson’s comment to Davy Jones was framed around console performance generally rather than naming specific hardware.
There’s no confirmation of how Xbox Series S factors in, and PS5 Pro’s situation is genuinely unknown. Kotaku, which reported on Nelson’s comments, put it plainly: there’s no sense yet of whether GTA 6 might offer different options on PS5 Pro specifically.
Sony’s more powerful console has the GPU horsepower to potentially support a higher framerate, but analysts have separately pointed out that PS5 Pro’s CPU is only marginally improved over base PS5, and framerate in a simulation-heavy game like this tends to be CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound.
So the honest state of things: 30fps is confirmed for the version of the game currently in development, shown running on base PS5. Whether PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or Series S get anything different remains genuinely unconfirmed rather than ruled out.
This Would Fit Rockstar’s Own Pattern

A 30fps-only launch wouldn’t be out of step with Rockstar’s history. GTA 5 didn’t get a 60fps option until its PS5 and Xbox Series X|S re-release years after the original launch. Red Dead Redemption 2 still doesn’t have an official 60fps mode on any console. Rockstar has consistently prioritized visual density and simulation depth over framerate at launch, then revisited performance later once a game’s technical footprint is better understood.
It’s also not an isolated situation this year. The Blood of Dawnwalker faced the same scrutiny ahead of its own launch, initially confirming no 60fps mode on PS5, PS5 Pro, or Xbox Series X before reversing course days later and adding one through a day-one patch. Dragon’s Dogma 2 followed a similar arc in the other direction, only picking up its 60fps performance mode through a patch after real backlash post-launch. Given GTA 6 doesn’t launch until November 19, there’s still time for Rockstar’s answer here to change, in either direction, before then.
