Story Highlights
- With some video games, you can never predict what their overall narrative direction is going to be.
- Titles such as Subnautica, Inscryption, and Soma, among others, are world-class experiences.
- These are best enjoyed when you do not know what bizarre turn these games will take going forward.
You can have your games that are best off experienced once, followed by underrated gems of the industry that are nothing but a delight to play, but in my opinion, games that are made to be dived into blindly are a different breed, because you never know what’s coming next. Linear action-adventures with a fairly predictable story arch are great and all — including Red Dead Redemption 2 — yet can only offer a sense of satisfaction to a certain extent.
That is why I’ve decided to put together a list of games that are best played when you know nothing about them. Now, obviously, as I enlist these titles down ahead, I won’t be going into much detail as to not to soil your potential experience. I will, however, talk about their genre, the reception surrounding them, and other non-spoiler information that you should read up on.
Prepare For A Wild Ride With These Titles
Make sure to post a comment down below in case you have a suggestion to make yourself.
1. Outer Wilds
Sporting one of the best progression systems I’ve ever tried out in a game, where stats don’t really matter as much as that one element that Outer Wilds hinges on, this one is not something you would want to skip playing. Talk about a supremely satisfying ending, great music, amazing gameplay, fantastic attention to detail, and a wholesome community that’s aching to help people in a way that spoils as little as possible to the player.
If you’re planning on getting into the title, the r/outerwilds subreddit is a great place to immerse yourself into.
2. Inscryption
Devolver Digital makes amazing games, and with Inscryption, you can say that the apple does not fall from the tree. This is a hyper-evolving title with a unique horror twist to it, not to mention the amalgamation of other genres that make this “odyssey” more than what you can handle. Oh, and once you think you’ve beaten the game, the real fun starts there. Let’s just leave it at that.
Every PC player needs to play this game right now, no questions asked.
3. Subnautica
At this point, I’ve recommended Subnautica on a variety of different topics more times than I can remember. This one’s got fantastic replayability, down to the point that you will want to complete it 100% because, yes, it’s that good, and not to mention deep-dyed lore that stretches much bigger than what you’ll initially think.
Subnautica can be horror when it needs to be, and stressful at times as well, but above all, it’s a game worth experiencing definitely if you’re after something fresh and new.
4. Disco Elysium
Let me tell you this beforehand: Negate all spoilers like the plague when Disco Elysium’s in the house. It’s an RPG focusing on a drunk detective who has to go around town solving fairly troubled cases. Things take a twist that’s, well let’s just say, bizarre on multiple levels soon afterward, and I really want you to get a taste of it blindly.
It’s also not violent, so if you’ve grown tired of playing the same type of titles over and over again, Disco Elysium is the perfect getaway for you.
5. Soma
From the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which is easily one of the most iconic games of all times, comes Soma. This is an equally terrifying, if not more, take on psychological horror with an ending that’s just going to blow your socks off. Funny thing is, the game keeps telling you how things are going to conclude, but it’s not like the shock is any dampened when everything actually goes down.
6. Nier: Automata
I can’t recall a game as magisterial as Nier: Automata. The chilling soundtrack, the atmosphere, and the overall way that the title handles its narrative are something you should get to experience at least once. Its main characters are charming in their own right, and the storyline is just pure chaos. No wonder the game has been a commercial success, raking in more than 7 million sold units.
eXputer reviewed the Nintendo Switch release of Nier: Automata, with author Huzaifah Durrani rating it a graceful 4.5/5.0 and remarking,
With NieR: Automata – The End of YoRHa Edition, the highly popular title finally arrives on the Nintendo Switch. This is the exact same game, with the same phenomenal narrative and addicting gameplay.”
