Story Highlights
- Those with a prolific interest for first-person shooters usually turn to COD or Fortnite.
- While those are great in their own way, players looking for something unusual have their options aplenty.
- Titles such as Titanfall 2, Hell Let Loose, and The Finals are absolutely amazing shooters in 2024.
The video game industry is seemingly dominated by the first-person shooter genre specifically by titanic names like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and even Overwatch, but there’s a lot more to this category than what meets the eye initially. With the battle royale genre seemingly at death’s door as well, it’s high time you, as an aspiring player, look into some of the lesser-known options out there.
I’ve decided to put together this article to highlight first-person shooters that you should be trying out in 2024. I’ve played all of these games, and I can wholeheartedly vouch for them as far as the quality is concerned. However, I understand that players have varying interests, so I recommend going through all the entries ahead diligently to discover what’s suited to your preferences more than others.
6 Of The Best Shooters In 2024 Other Than Call Of Duty And Co.
Oh, and don’t forget to post a comment down below in case you’ve got a contribution to make to the list.
1. Titanfall 2
I’m at a loss for words for how good Titanfall 2 is even in 2024 despite coming out almost a decade ago. Unfortunately, it’s a dead franchise now begging for a modern-day revival, considering how Respawn hasn’t worked on a new Titanfall game since forever, but take it from me that the title in question is still extremely entertaining in its own right.
Talk about a fantastic campaign with one of the most heartbreaking storylines, fantastic, fast-paced gunplay, and visuals that hold up by today’s standards. EA is sleeping on gold here when it’s not putting out a new Titanfall, seriously. You have to give the sequel a shot if you’re after something more unique than Call of Duty or Fortnite.
2. Hell Let Loose
Team17 is a fantastic game company, serving as the publisher of the likes of Blasphemous, while working itself on a shooter as distinct as Hell Let Loose. In a time that is filled to the brim with casual, light-hearted shooting titles such as Fortnite, Valorant, and Call of Duty, Hell Let Loose is hardcore only. The title bases its premise around World War 2 and puts heavy emphasis on co-op gameplay.
Certainly a breath of fresh air in a sea of duplicates that don’t stray further away from the likes of traditional shooters.
3. The Finals
Back when The Finals’ first open beta dropped in late 2023, the game was kicked off to resounding success. Soon after its global launch, the game celebrated more than 10 million players, making it known that a new game-show-themed shooter is here to stay. And the best part? It’s absolutely free to play, save for in-game microtransactions for cosmetics.
Embark Studios’ latest venture boasts great peculiarity as far as regular first-person shooters go, featuring cheeky death animations, destructible environments, and smart gadgetry that can be employed in various ways to encourage creative gameplay. This is a must-play, and I promise it’s not going to be a waste of your time if you happen to like out-of-the-box games.
eXputer rated The Finals’s beta 4/5 in its review, with author Asad Ahmed saying that the game “has the potential to go toe-to-toe with the kings of the arena-shooter genre, but it has a ways to go until it gets to that level.”
4. Insurgency: Sandstorm
Coming across as an exceptionally team-based multiplayer shooter, Insurgency: Sandstorm is the de facto answer to someone wanting to try a distinct new shooter in 2024. It’s a balls-to-the-wall FPS with a no-holds-barred approach to its action, with the gameplay grounded in sheer reality, though it is overall a light mil-sim game in the latter’s regard.
Insurgency: Sandstorm happens to be on sale right now on Steam, coming off for less than $10.
5. Hunt: Showdown
Crytek’s Hunt: Showdown probably takes its time for a new player to pick up the pace, but once you start getting the hang of it, the game automatically becomes the best PvP shooter out there. No joke. The visuals are on point and the combat gameplay is more than just satisfying.
6. Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal has a multiplayer mode as well — so don’t come at me just yet — but if we’re talking about a complete FPS experience whose origins trace back to the golden age of gaming, this is quite it. Talk about pure chaotic action where you feel like a champ, and not an underpowered protagonist barely keeping alive. No, you are the final boss in this game and not the other way around.
And while we’re at it, Doom Eternal has fun online multiplayer, with various modes to sate your hunger for competitive play. If you haven’t played it yet, you’re missing out. Big time.
