The Finals’ Open Beta Was A Resounding Success

The game clocked more than 7.5 million players.

Story Highlights

  • The Finals is a chaotic new arena-themed shooter, having recently hosted an open beta.
  • Player response to the FPS has been immensely positive, with many praising its high quality.
  • The game’s beta clocked more than 7.5 million players across different platforms.

The Finals is a brand-new arena-based first-person shooter, with a strong emphasis on team-based play. Although the game doesn’t bring an earth-shatteringly different experience to the table, it’s sat well with players and critics thanks to its great movement, clean UI, unique art, and amazing gunplay. Even more so, Embark Studios — the dev — made it official that The Finals’ beta clocked more than 7.5 million players.

For those not in the know, the free-to-play shooter’s open beta ran from October 26 to November 6, and its full release date hasn’t been given out by the developers. From the looks of it, though, The Finals has done a marvelous job attracting a swath of new players from all the platforms its open beta was released on, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

In the post on X, Embark says, “Now it’s time for us to hunker down and get back to work on all the fixes and improvements you helped us identify. GG and until next time!” signing the game off for now. It’s still not clear though whether we’ll see The Finals releasing fully or yet another open beta aimed to amass more player feedback in order to refine the shooter’s launch even more.

On Steam, the game recorded more than 235,000 concurrent players at one point, and that figure quickly jumped up to 267,000+ not long after, thanks to stats shown by SteamDB. That said, player statistics from Xbox Series X|S consoles and PlayStation 5 haven’t been pinpointed yet, but it’s pretty much clear by now that The Finals was received well on all platforms.

In other news, The Finals hasn’t been making headlines for just the good stuff as of late. The FPS has been criticized for its use of AI, as confirmed by Embark’s designer Andreas Almström, riling up the VA community to a fair extent. Right afterward, the studio released an official statement on the scandal, saying, “Making games without actors isn’t an end goal for Embark.”

The Finals does not have a release date yet and just wrapped things up with its open beta, which has been lauded with praise up until now. Its gameplay was first unveiled officially back in September last year, leading up to a closed beta that took place in the same month. The expected release date for the shooter title is December 2023.
