In Terraria, wings are crucial accessories for mobility, especially in Hard Mode. With 47 types available, each varies in rarity, stats, and origin. It’s worth noting that wings are exclusive to Hard Mode, except for Fledgling Wings.

Craftable wings typically require 20 Souls of Flight, obtained from Wyverns, and a key item, made at a Hard-Mode anvil. Meanwhile, some wings are purchasable or awarded.

The choice of wings depends on personal preferences and game progression. Early Hard Mode wings differ from those in later stages, offering varied stats and benefits.

Wings are a game accessory that allows your character to fly by pressing and holding the jump button temporarily. Some Wings also will enable you to hover at fixed heights and accelerate your character while you ascend, which will give your character more maneuverability.

Tier-0: Early Wings (Lowest Stats After Fledgling Wings)

Once you enter hard mode, we advise you not to go for the early wings available in the game, like the Angel or Demon Wings. Since you will have to mine a lot, the reward will not be worth the hassle. Still, if you want to get a pair of wings, then get Leaf Wings as they are easy to obtain.

Leaf Wings

Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed Bought/Crafted Amount For Buying/Materials For Crafting
Leaf Wings Pink 1.67 secs 53 Tiles -32 mph Horizontal Max

-150% Vertical Multiplier

Bought 75 Gold From Jungle Biome At Night

Though many wings become available once you enter Hard Mode, most of them will require Souls of flight to craft. This can be a little challenging since you must defeat the Wyvern (which is a hard mode enemy that spawns in the Sky) to collect Souls of Flight.

The good thing about leaf wings is that they can be easily bought from the Witch Doctor for 75 gold in the Jungle Biome at night. This makes them the Best Starting Wings since you don’t have to mine for them.

Tier-1: Best Early Wings (Improved Stats)

For Tier-1 Early Wings with improved stats, skipping Leaf Wings and opting for better options once you have Hard Mode upgrades is a wise choice. Three specific wings stand out in this tier due to their enhanced flight times, height, and speed.

Harpy Wings

  • Crafting: 20 Souls of Flight, 1 Giant Harpy Feather (1/200 drop rate from Harpies).
  • Stats: Same as above; craft only if the rare feather is already available to avoid lengthy farming.

However, Bat Wings and Flame Wings offer similar stats without the need to defeat a Mechanical Boss. Keep in mind that the crafting materials for these alternatives have lower drop rates, making Butterfly Wings the easier choice if you’ve already defeated a Mechanical Boss.

Tier-3 (Post Plantera)

The wings in this Tier will become available once you defeat Plantera. Specifically, the ingredients required to craft these wings can only be obtained after defeating Plantera. The details are given below.

Empress Wings

Empress boss - Premoon lord
The Boss Fight with the Empress of Light to unlock Empress Wings
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Empress Wings Cayn 2.5 secs 128 Tiles – 41 mph Horizontal Max

-275% Vertical Multiplier

The first set of wings in the special effect wings are the Empress Wings which are dropped by the Empress of Light. Unlike the other wings in this category that drop on chance after boss fights, these wings will be dropped once you defeat the Empress.

Although the flight time on these wings is relatively low, their great Ascending Speed is their selling point. This makes them perfect for boss Fights like the Moon Lord and the Empress herself. When you equip the Empress wings, you use the UP Button to make faster Ascents. Keep in mind that the Empress Boss Fight is available only after Plantera, and it is pretty tough, so make sure you are well prepared.

Fishron Wings

Best Wings in Terraria
The boss fight with Duke Fishron unlocks Fishron Wings.
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Fishron Wings Yellow 3 secs 143 Tiles – 41 mph Horizontal Max

-250% Vertical Multiplier

Except for the vertical multiplier, these Wings exceed the Empress Wings by all means. Unlike the Empress of Light, the fight with Duke Fishron is available as soon as you enter Hard Mode. You can Summon him by fishing in the ocean using Truffle Worms. However, the fight with the Duke is not for the faint of heart.

Like the Empress Wings, the Fishron Wings are obtained once you defeat Duke Fashion.

The only downside to these Wings is that they have a low drop rate which is 1/15 from the Duke. So, you might have to farm the Duke to get your hands on these Wings. However, the reward is worth the hassle since you won’t feel the need to get better wings until once you are done with the Moon Lord fight.

Another bonus on the Fishron Wings is that the speed penalty for moving through the water is removed, and they also leave a water bubble trail.

Betsy’s Wings

Best - boss fight
The Boss Fight with Besty that Drops Besty Wings
Wing Name Rarity Flight Time Height Flight Speed
Betsy’s Wings Yellow 2.5 secs 119 Tiles – 36 mph Horizontal Max

-275% Vertical Multiplier

These are obtained when you defeat Betsy who is the last boss in the Old One’s Army. The main feature of these wigs is that they allow you to hover like a hoverboard. Unlike the hoverboard, the hover speed bonus on these wings is 300% which is quite impressive.

A big downside to getting these wings is their Drop rate which is 1/4  from Betsy. So, you must defeat the Old One’s Army repeatedly to farm these wings. Not only is this redundant but also quite challenging.

Best Wings Post-Moon Lord

At this point, you are pretty much done with the game after defeating the Moon Lord. So, you can head in any direction you like. Specifically, five wings are worth mentioning at this point.

These have unmatched stats for all purposes with special bonuses.

They can mainly be divided into Hovering Focused Wings, Ascending Speed Focused Wings, and The Celestial Starboard.

  • Stats: 3 sec flight, 143 tiles height, 33 mph horizontal, 245% vertical multiplier.
  • Features: Both wings offer a 300% speed boost and 2x duration when hovering, making them ideal for controlled, sustained flight.

For Ascending Speed Purpose

Solar Wings and Stardust Wings

  • Crafting: 14 Solar or Stardust Fragments and 10 Luminite Bars (Solar and Stardust Fragments are also obtained from their respective Lunar Pillars).
  • Stats: 3 sec flight, 167 tiles height, 46 mph horizontal, 300% vertical multiplier.
  • Features: These wings provide a 50% extra max ascent speed with faster acceleration and emit light, enhancing visibility in dark areas.

Now it is time to mention the best wing-type accessory in the game, which is undoubtedly the Celestial Starboard. The Moon Lord drops this in Expert Mode. With the combined Stats of the best Hovering Wings and The best Speed Wings, the flight stats are undoubtedly the best in the game. It has a slower ascent with quicker acceleration using the UP key and Horizontal Hovering.
