What Are Heavy Vines

As you progress through the game, you’ll come across a bunch of heavy vines that are covering a chest or your path to progress the story. Whatever attack you would perform on it would have no effect on those vines. At that time, you’d need to use a special combo attack to destroy the heavy vines.

Destroying Heavy Vines

To destroy the Heavy Vines, you’ll first have to locate one of them. Here is a step by step guide:

1. Locate the Heavy Vines: Look for the Heavy Vines blocking your path or access to loot chests.
2. Equip Sigil Arrows: Ensure you have acquired Sigil Arrows. These arrows are necessary to weaken the Heavy Vines.

   

3. Aim and Shoot: Aim at the Heavy Vines using L2 and then press Square to command Freya to use her Sigil arrows on the vines. The vines will be marked with a purple hex.

   

4. Switch to Blades of Chaos: Since Kratos‘ Axe deals frost damage, switch to the Blades of Chaos as they deal fire damage, which is effective against the vines.
5. Use Blazing Surge: Get close to the Sigil marked on the vines and while holding L2 to aim, press R2 to perform the Blazing Surge attack. This will cause a powerful explosion at the Sigil’s location, destroying the Heavy Vines.
6. Destroy the Vines: If done correctly, the explosion from the Blazing Surge will burn and destroy the Heavy Vines, clearing your path.

Unlocking Sigil Arrows

• Sigil Arrows are unlocked during the 6th main quest, “The Reckoning,” by defeating the serpent Nidhogg.
• While they don’t inflict significant damage themselves, Freya’s Sigil arrows enhance elemental attacks on targeted areas.
• Combining Sigil arrows with elemental attacks helps defeat Nidhogg in the quest.
• Sigil arrows become crucial for destroying heavy vines encountered later in the game.
• To use them, press L2 to aim and tap Square to have Freya place a Sigil, then attack the marked spot with the Blades of Chaos.
• Once Atreus joins the team, Freya gives him Sigil arrows, allowing him to assist in placing Sigils for Kratos to utilize against the vines.

Destroying Normal Vines

You won’t always come across what will be heavy vines. At times, you’ll come across what is known as normal vines. Now, these vines aren’t strong enough that you’ll need the extra firepower that the Sigil arrows give to take them out.

When you come across such vines, you’ll only need to use your Blades of Chaos to burn them and clear your route. The chest or loot behind a normal vine would be much smaller than you’d get when you burn down the Heavy Vines.

So, if you come across any vines that your normal weapons can’t destroy, then don’t lose hope. It means that you still haven’t unlocked the Sigil arrows that are necessary to destroy the vines. Once you acquire the Sigil arrows, destroying these heavy vines becomes a piece of cake in God of War Ragnarok.

All you have to do is command your companion to place a sigil there. Once it is placed, Use your Chaos Blades to attack the sigil, and destroy the vines. Once the vines are destroyed, you can acquire the treasures hiding behind them. Or that the vines were covering your further progress in the story; you’re free to continue once they’re destroyed.
