During your time in Costa Del Sol, you’ll be introduced to Johnny and his Seaside Inn, which he hopes will transform into a seven-star resort soon. However, his sidequest in FF7 Rebirth, “The Saga of the Seaside Inn,” has an objective towards the end, where you’ll need to steal and deliver the Tonberry King Crown to him, who can be a formidable foe if you’re unprepared.
- The Tonberry King is an optional boss fight in FF7 Rebirth and has an obtainable item called the Pristine Crown.
- While you can give Johnny the Marred Crown, I recommend stealing the Pristine Crown instead for his sidequest.
- The Tonberry King can only be found once you scan all Corel Lifesprings, and you’ll also need the Buggy to cross the water to reach Johnny.
Recommended Team Composition & Loadout
For this sidequest objective, I went with a team composition of Cloud, Barret, and Yuffie due to how strong both the latter party members are in ranged combat.
Regarding Materia loadout, there isn’t anything special I’d recommend since the Tonberry King doesn’t have any particular elemental weaknesses to exploit. However, I strongly recommend having the Steal Materia equipped on Yuffie because she can quickly charge up her ATB via her ranged Ninjutsu attacks. For added assurance, you can also equip her with Luck Up Materia and Master Thief Folio Skills to increase the Steal Rate.
Location Of The Tonberry King
Like the Mindflayer in Junon and Marlboro from Gongaga, the Tonberry King is an optional boss fight that must be unlocked by scanning all six Lifesprings in the Corel Region.
Furthermore, the entire last step of the sidequest will be unachievable because the last of Johnny’s clones is standing across a body of water, unreachable even via swimming or your Chocobo Mount.
- The Buggy: Using the Buggy to get across will be your main way of reaching Johnny, unlocked once you clear the Gold Saucer section and reach the southern Corel desert in Chapter 9.
How To Defeat The Tonberry King And Steal The Crown
Below is my step-by-step process of how to steal the Tonberry King’s Pristine Crown for Johnny, a brief detail on its attacks as well as how to pressure him:
- Royal Treatment: As you begin the fight, the Tonberry King will likely cast this attack immediately, slowing down your ATB charge rate.
- Tonberry King Assessment: The Tonberry King doesn’t have any weaknesses, but assessing it will reveal that attacking right after it misses attacks will easily exploit him into a Pressured state.
- Well-Honed Knife: Like the Chef’s Knife attack of a normal Tonberry, the Well-Honed will one-shot KO your character in close range as you’ll be given a split second to evade it.
- Hopping Mad: An AOE attack where the Tonberry King will cast Pans to fall out of the sky, dealing upwards of 200 damage. It may stun you if hit multiple times, but these can be easily dodged.
- Rancor and Doom and Gloom: Both ranged attacks that can be easily telegraphed, but if hit, the former can stun you while the latter one-shot KOs the targeted character.
- Call For Friends: In my opinion, the most important attack is that he will summon normal Tonberries, which must be killed immediately, or else they can overwhelm your party.
- Stealing the Crown: Once you successfully evade his attacks, use your powerful commands to pressure him, making him lose his crown. After this, cast Steal on it using Yuffie to capture it.
- Completing the Fight: If done successfully, you’ll get a message on the right side of the Pristine Crown, after which just use your powerful attacks carefully to defeat the Tonberry King.
