In a new company advertisement, Capcom has revealed that it has sold approximately 500 million units of software in its grand 40-year history. As per the 40-year anniversary commercial, the Japanese gaming giant has shipped 307 titles in 230 countries and regions across the planet, with Resident Evil being its biggest success with over 142 million copies sold worldwide.
Capcom just recently celebrated its 40th birthday on June 11, 2023, and released these scintillating statistics to highlight how far the game developer had come since its formation in 1983. As of Fiscal Year 2023, which ended this March, the company has shipped half a billion video games since its inception. It also listed its biggest franchises across this 40-year period, with Resident Evil unsurprisingly taking the top spot.
Monster Hunter came 2nd in the overall Capcom ranking with over 92 million units sold since its first game came out in 2004. The Street Fighter series rounded out the top 3 with 49 million games shipped during its tenure. As mentioned above, these figures are only correct as of March 2023, so they don’t account for the remarkable sales of Street Fighter 6.
In addition, the Capcom advertisement also divided the regions of Earth based on how the company’s games have sold there. Only 7 countries have bought more than one million copies of the Japanese publisher’s titles, with 23 regions amassing over 100,000 video game shipments. Furthermore, Capcom has sold over 1,000 copies in at least 74 countries around the world and more than 100 in 48 regions.
A large number of nations, 78 to be specific, have also bought less than a hundred of the company’s titles. Overall, Capcom has been more than competent in sales and has been flourishing even more in its recent history. Its most recent release, Street Fighter 6, has been a worldwide success both critically and commercially. Just five days after launching, the fighting game sold over one million copies around the world.
It easily outpaced the sales of its predecessor, Street Fighter V, and also beat it in critical reception with many critics calling it the perfect fighting game. Besides these achievements, Street Fighter 6 also beat every other major title from the big three fighting franchises in Steam concurrent users after release. Capcom’s other recent release, Resident Evil 4, was also a massive success for the company.
