Cyberpunk 2077, the action RPG from noteworthy Polish game maker CD Projekt Red got treated to a brand-new expansion late in 2023, along with a general overhaul that redeemed the game’s reputation following its disastrous launch in 2020. In a new post on X now, said expansion Phantom Liberty has sold over 5 million copies to date, a remarkable milestone for the developers in every stretch of the word.

“Over 5 million agents have infiltrated Dogtown! Thank you for all your support — and good luck on your mission,” reads the announcement as the developer expresses its gratitude to the playing community. The sales count now is a significant bump from the last time CDPR reported these stats back in October when the Dogtown-focused DLC rolled over 3 million units.
And in total, the base game has gone on to sell a whopping 25 million copies up until now, signaling the commercial success of the RPG despite its critically marred launch. Come to think of it, the RPG at hand has gone through a period of resurgence, and if there’s one thing that picked Cyberpunk 2077 up from the depths of post-launch hell, it’s the undying spirit of CD Projekt Red.
“I believe in the team, I believe in this IP, but I want to do it right. And I’m going to need the support to do that. And they’re like, yes, you have the support. The groundwork we laid in 1.5, 1.6 was all culminating in the plan in 2.0,” said Game Director Gabe Amatangelo in an interview with PC Gamer while pointing at the revitalizing Update 2.0 for Cyberpunk 2077.

In other news, the devs over at CDPR are already brainstorming some of the aspects that they’d like to improve upon in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. One of them is to have more branching narratives, so players can explore different life paths and pursue the backgrounds and stories of other characters just as well. Of course, a new game in the series is years away from now and is probably likely to address the failures of the prequel to a good extent.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was released on September 26, 2023, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. eXputer reviewed the expansion and rated it 4.5/5, with reviewer Usama Mehmood remarking, “With the release of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red has finally delivered the grand RPG they promised all those years ago.”
