Cyberpunk 2 Might Address Its Predecessor’s Biggest Narrative Complaint

The sequel seems promising already.

Story Highlights

  • CDPR devs claim that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2 will have more emphasis on how Life Paths affects the storyline.
  • The narrative director, Philipp Weber, expressed plans for the sequel in the AnsweRED podcast.
  • Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Orion, is an upcoming sequel by CD Projekt Red.

CD Projekt Red’s narrative director, Philipp Weber, touched briefly on Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed Project Orion), in the AnsweRED podcast, revealing that the CDPR team will put emphasis on how Life Paths will play out in the game. In Cyberpunk 2077, the players were offered three life paths to choose from, including Nomad, Corpo, and Street Kid. Skip to 17:30 to listen to their conversation below:

However, while the first few hours of the game were different depending upon the life path chosen, the storylines essentially merged into one, making life paths somewhat irrelevant. The narrative director claimed that the idea of life paths gave a “promise that did not really sell,” considering they were a huge part of marketing the game itself. One of the lead quest designers of the next Witcher game codenamed Polaris, Blazej Augustynek, who also worked on Cyberpunk 2077, was present during the podcast and shared his opinion as well.

He stated that the life path was not of much importance to the main story and was only significant for the “prologue.” However, it seems that CDPR has ambitious plans for life paths and how they will affect the story in the upcoming sequel Cyberpunk 2, which was announced in October. There’s not much known about the sequel itself since after Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch, most of the dev’s attention was on improving the game.

With Phantom Liberty expansion being the RPG’s successful attempt at redemption, CD Projekt Red seems to be regaining the trust of its fans. Exputer has reviewed Phantom Liberty, rating it 4.5/5, remarking on its engaging storyline while pointing out highly demanding PC requirements. The expansion was released on September 26, 2023, across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
