FIFA 23: Everything We Know So Far

EA’s FIFA has been an iconic series. With new additions being released every year, it is almost a ritual to buy the next game. Although we don’t have anything confirmed from EA just yet, there have been leaks and even rumors that FIFA 23 may well be the last “FIFA.” So, let’s explore all these details and discuss FIFA and everything we know so far!

FIFA 23 Release Date and Platforms

As of yet, there is no exact release date that has been announced by EA. However, from the previous trends, EA tends to drop FIFA in a specific time period, and we can expect FIFA 23 to drop in that same period.

Here are the release dates of the previous 3 titles:

• FIFA 20: September 24, 2019
• FIFA 21: October 9, 2020
• FIFA 22: October 1, 2021

All of these dates are the Friday of late September or early October. So, we can expect that FIFA 23 could come out on a similar date. So, either September 30, 2022, or October 7, 2022, seem like possible dates of release.

But it is worth considering that FIFA 21 was delayed due to the pandemic, and they could release FIFA 23 earlier and release it on September 23, 2022, which would be more in line with the release date of FIFA 20.

We can expect it to release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. There are slim chances, but considering the last FIFA got released on Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PS4, we might see it get released on those platforms too.

But that’s everything we know so far about FIFA 23 release date and platforms. We’ll have to stick around to get more information.

FIFA 23 Trailer

As of yet, we don’t have a trailer for FIFA 23. There is no E3 this year, so fans are wondering when EA will release the trailer or if it’ll get delayed. EA also tends to be present at the Sony and Microsoft Shows, but that’s a no-go because EA prefers to have its own Video Reveals, especially in the EA Play Live event.

But unfortunately, EA announced that its annual EA Play Live showcase won’t be happening this year. Considering FIFA 23 didn’t appear in the Summer Game Fest opening stream either, it’s quite confusing what EA is planning.

But an EA representative did make a statement to IGN, saying, “We love EA Play Live as it’s our way of connecting with our players and sharing what’s new with all of you. However, this year things aren’t lining up to show you everything on one date.

We have exciting things happening at our world-class studios, and this year we’ll reveal much more about these projects when the time is right for each of them.”

So, it seems like they’re focusing on one game at a time, and we’ll just have to wait to hear things directly from EA. But it is worth noting that FIFA 22 was revealed fully in July 2021, so we can expect something soon. 

The Last “FIFA”

EA Sports has confirmed that after 30 years, it will be ending its partnership with FIFA. This was confirmed in a blog post where they later revealed that the 2023 series will be called EA Sports FC. That means that this year’s game will be called FIFA 23, but that will be the last FIFA title from EA. Here’s everything we know so far about FIFA 23 being the last FIFA.

However, it is just the name change as EA promised that nothing else in their game would change. They said that: “Everything you love about our games will be part of EA Sports FC – the same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs, and athletes.” They also said that Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs, and Volta Football will be there as well.

They talked about the licensing as well and said: “Our unique licensing portfolio of more than 19,000+ players, 700+ teams, 100+ stadiums, and 30 leagues that we’ve continued to invest in for decades will still be there, uniquely in EA Sports FC. That includes exclusive partnerships with the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, the MLS – and more to come.”

We don’t really know the specifics about EA Sports FC, but there has been some insight given by EA. CEO Andrew Wilson said: “Our vision for EA Sports FC is to create the largest and most impactful football club in the world, at the epicenter of football fandom.” 

He continued saying, “For nearly 30 years, we’ve been building the world’s biggest football community – with hundreds of millions of players, thousands of athlete partners, and hundreds of leagues, federations, and teams. EA Sports FC will be the Club for every one of them and for football fans everywhere.

We’re thankful for our many years of great partnership with FIFA. The future of global football is very bright, and fandom around the world has never been stronger. We have an incredible opportunity to put EA Sports FC at the heart of the sport and to bring even more innovative and authentic experiences to the growing football audience.”

The FIFA 23 Cover

FIFA’s Covers are always quite anticipated as they feature new players each time. Here is everything we know so far about the FIFA 23 Cover.

With the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo era being over, there are new contenders for the cover. Previously Eden Hazard and Virgil van Dijk were considered for FIFA 20, whereas Kylian Mbappe stared in the FIFA 21 and 22 covers.

Therefore, we can assume that Mbappe might be considered for the FIFA 23 cover, and perhaps there’s even a secret contract that has him for the front cover of the game for numerous years. However, if that’s not the case, then Erling Haaland is another strong contender as well.

Considering he just agreed to join Manchester City from Dortmund in the summer, he could earn a lot of pre-season coverage.

FIFplay had a FIFA 23 cover vote and Riyah Mahrez got 10k votes. Although it seems unlikely that he’ll get featured, at least we know what the fans want.

Crossplay in FIFA 23

Crossplay could be a huge possibility in FIFA 23, especially considering all the tests that have happened in FIFA 22 regarding the matter. Here is everything we know about FIFA 23 crossplay.

As you might know that in FIFA 22, EA has tested out crossplay, allowing players to play multiplayer matches with friends even if they’re on a different platform.

The testing was only done on PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and Google Stadia. Unfortunately, even PC versions did not get it.

Online Friendlies and Online Seasons got to see this crossplay mode, and EA said that it’s limited just to those modes to fix any technical issues that might appear.

These tests definitely point to the possibility that crossplay is something that we can see in FIFA 23. Many leaks have suggested that almost every single game mode would be in crossplay. Furthermore, even the trading market could be something that is common among all platforms rather than separately for each one.

Industry insider and leaker Tom Henderson also had something to say about this claim. He said, “One of the biggest changes to this year’s FIFA title, though, is that it will feature crossplay for the first time in the series’ history, bringing FIFA players across the PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms together for all of the title’s game modes.”

There have also been claims that you’ll get the option to turn on or off crossplay just like you had the option to turn it off in the testing. We’ll have to stick around to see just how fleshed out the system is.

Other FIFA 23 News

There have been various other minor leaks regarding FIFA 23 as well. So here is everything we know so far about FIFA 23 and the small leaks that we’ve gotten.

Better Hypermotion Technology

Video games tend to capture animations from humans to create smoother and more realistic motions. Well, Tom Henderson said that there have been a lot of improvements made to the Hypermotion Technology that was introduced in FIFA 22.

Apparently, it “now allows the development team to capture animations from real footballers in real matches using stadium cameras, eliminating the need for Xsens suits.”

Due to this advancement, Tom said the development team has been able to get “over 100 times more data in a single league season than they have captured in the franchise’s entire 29-year history.”

No More Position Modifiers

A leaker, Fut Sheriff, tweeted, saying that apparently, there will not be any more specific position modifiers in the game. Each player will have a primary position, and most of them will have a secondary position.

This is a huge change and something that many of the fans have been wanting for a long time. It feels more realistic and will definitely change the way that players will build their squads.

You won’t be able to take your CDM as your Strikers or drastically change the positioning of any other character.

Free To Play?

There have been rumors that FIFA 23 might be free to play, but as of yet, they’ve remained just rumors. Though it could make sense considering it is the last “FIFA” title, and EA would want as many players hooked to the game as possible before they make the shift to EA Sports FC. With it also being the world cup year, this strategy could definitely work out.

Considering the earnings from all the previous FIFA games, EA can definitely support a free-to-play version of FIFA. But you can expect that the packs could cost a lot more.

But there have been equal rumors suggesting that only the Ultimate Team would be free to play. Other game modes such as pro clubs and a career mode that EA spends time to develop and depends on for revenue would still be paid.

Regarding this matter, Tom Henderson said, “there has been no indication from sources familiar with the project that FIFA 23 will be free-to-play.” He’s right, and there’s nothing but speculation at this point.

FIFA 23 Licenses

There have been a few changes in the licensing for FIFA 23. Here’s everything we know so far about the licensing.

Four Italian Clubs will be renamed in FIFA 23:

• Juventus will be called Piemonte Calcio
• AS Roma will be Roma FC
• Atalanta will become Bergamo Calcio
• Lazio is going to be Latium

Last year Konami mentioned a deal with Napoli that’s only exclusive to them. What that essentially means is that Diego Maradona’s former side will now have a different name in FIFA 23.

It is worth mentioning that the player licenses are not bound to the club ones, so the looks of the players will still reflect the real faces of the players.

We don’t have exact information on the licensing of the game. But EA has announced that EA Sports and FIFA 23 aren’t going to be short on licensing, and we’ll definitely get 19k players, 700 teams, 100 stadiums, and more than 30 leagues.

EA and Russian Teams

In March, CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, and Spartak Moscow were all removed from FIFA 22 due to the Russian-Ukrainian relations. Additionally, the Russian national side, kits, and players from the Russian Clubs in Ultimate Team disappeared.

As of now, FIFA 23 does not have any national side or Russian Club. That does seem to be the case moving forward, but it might still be too early to say anything.

FIFA 23 New Clubs

There have been three new clubs that have been added to FIFA 23. FC Andorra will be added to the Segunda Division of the Spanish League.

There is also another club in England called Stockport Country FC and Grimsby Town that have promoted being in FIFA 23.

The Club that was removed from FIFA 23 is FC Bordeaux from the French league. They got relegated to the third division of the French League due to some cash problems. As the game does not cover the third division, the Club will no longer be in FIFA. But that is everything we know so far about the new clubs in FIFA 23

5 Substitutions

There have been rumors that you will now be able to make 5 substitutions. The rule has been active in most leagues and has been added to FIFA Online 4 as well, so it could likely be in FIFA 23 too.

It might be unlikely that someone would make that many substitutions in FIFA Ultimate Team. But perhaps it can be handy in the Career Mode to save your players’ stamina.

Online Career Mode?

There is a possibility of an Online Career mode. A leaker claimed in a tweet that an online career mode is in development for EA Sports FC, and some features could be added to FIFA 23.

There would be mechanics such as talking to the players before the match and during halftime. Additionally, new negotiation and interactive transfer cutscenes will also get added.

The leaker also suggested that the online mode could be a completely separate free-to-play mode as well. And they said that the regular FIFA 23 Career Mode will have a stadium Builder and Editor section. You will be able to edit billboards, stadium capacity, dynamic of the stadium, colors, and more.

Could online mode come to FIFA 23 as well? We’ll have to wait and see.

FIFA 23 Features Wish List 

If you are a FIFA fan then you will probably know about the career mode expert Matt Killeen. He feels that the EA focuses too much on realism that kind of effects the gameplay in one way or another. He says that EA should pull back on the aspect a little bit.

For example, he says that sometimes the authentic sunlight the game has and the realistic shadows render the stadiums unplayable in certain conditions. He also expressed that the number one thing on his wish list is that the players can get a feature that will allow them to update their kit in the upcoming seasons of FIFA. 

Furthermore, he said that the Contracts Model should be reworked completely. It is no doubt that the players of FIFA prefer career mode then the Ultimate Team cards. Players also want to see more Scottish lower leagues. 

FUT 23 Companion App And Web App 

There has been a companion app/web app released recently on September 21st and 22nd. The best part about the app is that you can manage your FUT Squad easily using the app. With the practicality, it offers you will be able to become a pro from the early stages of the game. 

Ultimate Team Mode 

By using the FUT web app players can get the Ultimate Team mode in FIFA 23. The game mode is highly anticipated by the fans as it offers some brand new FUT improvements with a complete system overhaul. The feature will be introduced every this season. 

Collaboration With Marvel 

In a collaboration with Marvel, Entertainment EA has announced that they will be bringing a new set of a cast featuring the FIFA Ultimate Team Heroes in FIFA 23. They will be heavily inspired by Marvel Comics and will be a treat for the fans of FIFA and Marvel.

The amazing artists at Marvel will also make sure that they combine the elements of FIFA and Marvel superheroes in the best way possible. Every FIFA World Cup FUT Hero will get a FUT item illustrated especially for them. Furthermore, at the launch of FIFA 23, access to the base version will be available. 

Ones To Watch (OTW)

EA also announced that they will be adding four OTW items to the FIFA23 Ultimate Team. We will also get to see Raheem Sterling and Erling Haaland. 

Furthermore, it seems like there have been some changes in the upgrade systems for the event so let’s see what FIFA 23 has in store for us. 

As you know that FIFA 23 has been released and it’s even better than what we expected. The gameplay this year is improved and it’s much more fluid with a lot of hyperrealistic elements that make FIFA 23 worth it. 

Why Part From FIFA?

It’s pretty much confirmed that EA is shifting away from FIFA, but many fans have wondered why that might be the case. Here is everything we know so far about why EA is parting from FIFA.

Before the confirmation, a report from VGC said that Andrew Wilson, EA’s CEO, talked about the reasons for their departure in an internal meeting. The comments were sent out to VGC anonymously.

The report said that it “understands EA is currently planning to release this year’s game as FIFA 23 and include two FIFA World Cup tournaments – the men’s and women’s events – for the first time.”

But Andrew Wilson told the EA employees that moving away from FIFA could be beneficial. “I would argue – and this may be a little biased – that the FIFA brand has more meaning as a video game than it does a governing body of soccer,” said Wilson.

“We don’t take that for granted, and we try not to be arrogant. We’ve worked really hard to try and make FIFA understand what we need for the future.”

“Basically, what we get from FIFA in a non-World Cup year is the four letters on the front of the box, in a world where most people don’t even see the box anymore because they buy the game digitally.”

Furthermore, the report said that Wilson mentioned that EA’s relationship with FIFA has been an “impediment” when trying to add new features or grow the game in general.

One prime example that he gave was that they cannot introduce new brands like Nike because of FIFA’s relationship with Adidas.

They’ve also struggled to add player-requested new modes of play and different things other than just the regular 11v11. Wilson said that it has been a fight to get FIFA to acknowledge the types of things that they want to create simply because their license only covers certain categories.

Those are just a few of the reasons why they’re moving away from FIFA and creating EA Sports FC. Hopefully, with more freedom, they’ll add new fun modes that fans can enjoy.
