The original Final Fantasy 7 has reached a huge milestone despite winning the hearts of gamers for decades already. The entry has now sold over 14.4 million copies globally since 1997, as revealed in the annual 2023 Square Enix financial report. It counts both the physical and digital sales and clarifies how the game has continued to sell at a steady pace because of its lovable characters, immersive story, enticing art style, and more.

Since the release in 1997, this game franchise has attracted many players with its epic and touching stories, fascinating characters, and its use of cutting-edge visual technologies of the time. Physical and digital sales have topped 14.4 million units to date,” reads the annual yearly report.

It is arguably Square Enix’s one of the best works yet in terms of sales and overall popularity. The RPG has gone on to spawn multiple reworks —in the form of a modern and extended trilogy of remakes— merchandise, and even an anime at one point. It also boasts a huge audience because of its playability on almost all the available old platforms and PCs. As a result, many new players have poured into the title to give it a shot over the years.

The annual 2023 financial report also commemorated the Final Fantasy IP and highlighted its new achievement. Final Fantasy as a whole has now shipped over 185 million physical and digital units combined around the globe. Square Enix clarified that bringing the RPG franchise into the Western markets over the years has made such a gargantuan sales milestone possible to achieve.

Final Fantasy 7 originally came out on January 31, 1997, for the original PlayStation. It is now available to play worldwide on consoles, including PC, iOS and Android, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. However, it is not yet available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X platforms.
