Final Fantasy X Series Sales Reach 20.8 Million

Combined sales of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 have reached this landmark

It’s extremely hard to put out successful titles decade after decade for any series. Only some rare gaming franchises in the industry have both longevity and success. Final Fantasy is one of those select few franchises that have been releasing amazing games year after year.

The series has been around for almost 35 years now and has a huge amount of games. From the 15 mainline entries to several spin-offs, it has shown no sign of stopping. With each game selling more than the last one there is no reason they should.

Among the more special games in the franchise, Final Fantasy X and X-2 are two names. These titles are peculiar because unlike most Final Fantasy games which feature standalone stories, they feature a single one. Now, both the game and it’s continuation, X-2, have reached a new sales landmark.

Sales of the Final Fantasy X which includes both X and X-2 have reached a total of 20.8 million units as of September 2021. Gematsu broke this news after getting confirmation of this number from Square Enix. Combined sales of both the games have now officially topped the 20 million number.

Back in 2013, Square Enix announced that the series had collectively shipped more than 14 million units. Now, this was before the release of the Final Fantasy X/ X-2 HD Remaster collection which came out at the end of 2013. So, the collection most probably makes up most of the remaining 6.8 million copies sold over the last 9 years.

Square Enix also announced more Final Fantasy X content coming very soon, but it isn’t digital. A new Final Fantasy X Kabuki play will take place at the IHI Stage Around Tokyo in spring 2023. This will be a part of the 35h anniversary celebration of Final Fantasy which is on the 18th of December, 2022.

Another implication of this landmark is that Final Fantasy X is coming for Final Fantasy VII’s highest sold game in the series crown. Final Fantasy VII’s Remake and compilation have sold nearly 30 million units combined which is far greater than Final Fantasy X. But, maybe a remake of the series can help it overtake the current leader.

Fans of the series love Final Fantasy X series arguably considering to be the peak of Final Fantasy. So, not only will a remake be great fan service, we will also get a closer battle at the top of the franchise. Hopefully we see something new from the game after this sales landmark
