The Halo battle royale title —codenamed Project Tatanka— was long-rumored to be an integral next step for Halo Infinite. However, the unannounced entry appears to have been canceled by the devs after spending years in the brewer. The accredited insider Shpeshal_Nick brought up the tidbit during the latest XboxEra podcast episode and claimed it was canceled.

From 2:24:50, all the hosts discuss the contentious Halo battle royale project and claim they independently heard from their sources that it was canceled. While Microsoft had never officially announced the title, devs from Certain Affinity did bring it up in interviews using vague undertones. It was first discovered at the advent of 2022 as a new game mode for Halo Infinite.

Last year, a report from Bloomberg’s prominent Jason Schreier clarified that Project Tatanka had started as a battle royale mode but possibly evolved into something else. However, further details about the rumored in-dev game never came out since then until the confirmation of its cancelation.

Previously, Certain Affinity COO and president Paul Sams gave a vague statement about the Halo battle royale project in an interview, establishing it as an unofficial yet credible game mode for Halo Infinite. He claimed that the Certain Affinity team was cooking something “big and new” for the latest Halo release.

For more than two years now we’ve been working on Halo Infinite doing something that – they’re very prescriptive about what we can say. […] It’s something big and new for the franchise. But I can’t say any more about it. That’s our single largest project of our three projects currently. We have close to 100 developers working on that.”

We suggest taking the rumors with a massive grain of salt. In related news, a fan had been working on his unofficial version of the Halo battle royale mode in case the devs never released it.
