Metroid Dread Developer Is Currently Making Two “Large Unannounced Titles”

Can a 2D Metroid title be one of these games?

Story Highlights

  • Metroid Dread developer Mercury Steam is currently working on two large undisclosed games.
  • The studio’s minority stake owner, Nordisk Games, uncovered this info in its latest financial report.
  • One of these titles is probably the dark fantasy RPG the Spanish studio is developing with 505 Games.
  • However, nothing is official about the second game, which fans hope is a 2D Metroid title.

Mercury Steam, the creator of 2021’s Metroid Dread, is currently hard at work and engaged in developing two major surprise games after its previous success. A financial report from Nordisk Games (which MauroNL aggregated), the company which owns a 40% stake in the studio, revealed this info about the Spanish studio, saying the minority-owned company is developing “two large undisclosed titles.

No other info was given about the projects in the financial documents, but we do have some knowledge about one of these games. Mercury Steam announced way back in November 2021 that it was working alongside 505 Games to make a dark fantasy third-person action RPG. Hence, it’s very likely this is one of the games in the works at the Metroid Dread developer.

Many fans are predicting that the second game Mercury Steam is developing could be a 2D Metroid title. Of course, there is no proof of this and nothing is official but considering the studio’s past work, it isn’t very unlikely. Before it worked on Metroid Dread, the Spanish developer also made Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS, which was playable from a 2.5D perspective and was a competent triumph commercially for Nintendo.

Before the 2017 title, Mercury Steam also developed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow alongside Konami Productions for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Just like Metroid Dread and Samus Returns, the 2010 adventure title was a critical success, getting praise from critics and fans alike. In addition, Lords of Shadow was also a huge commercial victory, becoming the best-selling Castlevania title and fulfilling Konami’s expectations.

But, without a doubt, Mercury Steam’s biggest success until now has been 2021’s Metroid Dread. The action-adventure title was one of the best games of 2021, receiving universal acclaim from critics, getting nominated for several Game of the Year awards, and also winning a few. Furthermore, the Nintendo Switch title became a major success for both the Spanish developer and the publisher.

As of July 2023, Metroid Dread has sold over 3 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Metroid game in the franchise’s history, which is a pretty big achievement. Therefore, Mercury Steam is responsible for creating two brilliant best-selling titles for historical franchises. When you consider their amazing track record, it’s hard to not get excited about what the Spanish studio has in store for us.

Hopefully, we hear about the games it has in the works sooner rather than later.
