Capcom achieves another milestone as the cumulative unit sales of its iconic Resident Evil series hits the 146 million mark. This achievement was announced in the company’s first-quarter report of the Fiscal Year 2023 along with the accomplishments of other IPs owned by Capcom, such as Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Mega Man, and Devil May Cry.
The latest entry in the critically acclaimed series was the remake of Resident Evil 4, a near-legendary game that revolutionized third-person shooters with its over-the-shoulder perspective. Capcom began its streak of remakes in 2019, setting the standard for rebuilding classic experiences for a new generation. Following the success of RE2 & a fumble in the form of RE3, fans were unsure when a remake of the fourth entry was revealed.
Fast forward to July 2023 and RE4 has sold a total of five million units worldwide, significantly contributing to the series’ latest achievement. Not only did the game launch to universal acclaim, its performance levels were surprisingly premium, even on PC. The recent trend of abysmal ports did no favors in alleviating consumer doubt.
Aside from this new milestone for the Resident Evil series, Monster Hunter as a whole has sold 94 million units, with its latest entry. Monster Hunter Rise, crossing 13 million. Additionally, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection sold over a million units, bringing the series’ cumulative total to 40 million. Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma happen to be sitting at 29 million and 7.7 million units respectively.
The next major entry in Resident Evil is reportedly slated for 2025 with fans speculating about more remakes being in the pipeline. These speculations stem from Capcom’s recent survey and a reference to RE5 at the end of 2023’s RE4. At the moment, there is no confirmation on either front. In the meantime, fans of the series are looking towards the new CGI film—Death Island.
Celebrating the release of the new movie, Capcom has announced a sale for the Resident Evil franchise allowing fans to catch up on any games they’ve been holding out on.
The series’ latest offering, Resident Evil 4, is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. Read on to find out why we believe it to be true perfection.
