Story Highlights
- Respawn Entertainment boss Vince Zampella wants to eventually make Titanfall 3
- The third entry in the Titanfall franchise is not currently in development.
- Respawn is busy developing a number of titles, leaving little room for a new Titanfall.
The Titanfall franchise from Respawn Entertainment is one of the most beloved FPS franchises. The games have mustered a cult following over the years, with the last entry in the franchise releasing in 2016. The popular battle royale game Apex Legends is also developed by Respawn and shares the same universe. The games creator says he would like to make a new entry in the franchise.
Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment spoke with Barrons about the future of the Titanfall Franchise. When asked about the future of the Titanfall franchise, Zampella responded saying,
We’re not working on anything currently. I hate to say yes, then people latch onto that, and then skewer you when it doesn’t come. But I would love to see it happen is the real answer. There’s no exact dedicated plans for that. It has to be the right thing. It’s such a beloved franchise for the fans and also for us. If it is not the right moment in time, the right idea, then it just doesn’t make sense.”
Respawn is busy, and it is not likely for a new Titanfall game to begin development any time soon. Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, developed by Respawn releases this Friday. The company is also busy working on 2 more Star Wars games, not including a potential sequel to Jedi Survivor to top off the Star Wars: Jedi trilogy. Let Alone all the work Respawn is doing on Apex Legends.
While a Titanfall 3 may not release anytime soon, Titanfall 2 has aged perfectly and is still a go-to FPS for many fans of the genre. Earlier this year, it was reported that Respawn had canceled a single-player Apex Legends game that would have included characters from the Titanfall games, such as Zack Cooper and the beloved BT-7274.
A new Titanfall game is not in development and likely won’t be for some time. The modern AAA game has a development cycle that lasts years if not a decade. If a Titanfall 3 were to start development today, we likely would not be able to play it until 2028 or so. But every studio’s timeline is different, Titanfall 3 likely won’t exist in the near future.
At the moment, Respawn is developing a Star Wars FPS influenced by the Jedi Knight series, a potential sequel to Jedi Survivor, new Apex Legends content, and a Star Wars strategy game alongside Bitr Reactor. The studio is busy and will not be likely to fit a new Titanfall game in its development cycle if a new Titanfall game were to even be approved.
The decision to forego a third Titanfall game is likely due to the series’ poor sales, often attributed to being released near other big releases. Titanfall 2 was released sandwiched between Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefront 1, which was another game published by EA and developed by sister studio DICE. While this news is disappointing, never say never, even if you have to wait a long time.
