A Hogwarts Legacy Series For HBO Max Is Reportedly In The Works

Sources tell Giantfreakingrobot about the existence of the series.

Story Highlights

  • Hogwarts Legacy could be adapted into a live-action series.
  • Warner Bros. could be impressed by Hogwarts Legacy’s sales.
  • This comes after the box office underperformance of the Fantastic Beasts spinoffs.
  • Other Harry Potter projects could be planned as well.

Hogwarts Legacy has been a sales success. The game, set in the Harry Potter universe has broken numerous records, becoming the highest-watched single-player game on Twitch and outselling Elden Ring in some markets.

Hogwarts Legacy’s success could have some at Warner Brothers considering new projects in the Harry Potter universe. According to a report from Giantfreakingrobot, HBO is looking at developing a live-action series based on Hogwarts Legacy for its HBO Max streaming service.

The Harry Potter/Wizarding World franchise is one of the most popular media franchises of all time. Spanning multiple books, movies, theme parks, games, and spinoffs, there was great potential for a AAA game set in this universe.

Despite the success of the franchise, recent spinoff movies such as the Fantastic Beasts series did not perform as well as expected at the box office, worrying some that interest in the IP was waning. This was not the case, as per the success of Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1800s, and an HBO max series would most likely be set in the same unique timeline, moving away from the modern-day setting of the Harry Potter movies. This new era would likely allow greater creative freedoms as the developers of Hogwarts Legacy did.

The success of the game could also have Warner Brothers reconsidering other projects. Rumors have arisen since the launch of the game that the original cast of Harry Potter could reunite for a film adaptation of The Cursed Child, a book set after the events of the Harry Potter series.

The last true game in the Harry Potter series was the Deathly Hollows game in 2010 and 2011 and of course various Lego games since then. Ever since, the only games set in the IP were mobile games.

A AAA title set in the universe made for modern gaming consoles and hardware is what was most likely needed to reignite interest in the franchise. Let’s see if Warner Brothers and HBO can capitalize on it.

In the meantime, watch our initial impressions of the game ahead.
