In a new feature published on its official newsroom, Disney confirmed that its games portfolio includes nine franchises that have each grossed over $1 billion at retail, naming Kingdom Hearts and Marvel Strike Force specifically as part of that group. The company didn’t break out an individual figure for Kingdom Hearts itself, but its inclusion on that list is the clearest confirmation yet of just how much the Square Enix and Disney crossover series has earned since its 2002 debut.

Sean Shoptaw, EVP of Global Games and Digital Entertainment, framed the milestone as part of a broader philosophy shift. “We’ve built a really foundational footprint in games today,” he said, adding that the strategy is “about telling truly original stories that really are unique to this medium, specifically,” rather than simply retelling Disney’s films and shows.

Disney says more than half of its nine billion-dollar franchises have emerged in just the last 12 years, and is investing in newer franchises like Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, arriving in September.

Disney Games, working alongside licensee partners, drove an estimated $3.5 billion in annual consumer spending for four consecutive years before crossing $4 billion in the past fiscal year. Beyond its billion-dollar franchises, Disney points to Marvel Rivals as proof of concept for reaching younger audiences, with the hero shooter attracting 40 million players worldwide, 60% of them under age 24.

The game also supports what Disney calls the largest Discord community in gaming, with more than 4.4 million members, and generated over 285 million Twitch viewing hours in 2025.

Disney’s mobile portfolio tells a similar story of scale, with Disney Solitaire, Disney Tsum Tsum, and Disney Magic Kingdoms combining for more than 1 billion installs since 2014, while Lucasfilm Games now spans more than 20 genres across every major platform.

Betting Big On Fortnite And What Comes Next

Much of Disney’s forward-looking strategy centers on its partnership with Epic Games. “What Epic has built with Fortnite has really created one of the most important social entertainment platforms in the world,” Shoptaw said, describing the collaboration as a chance to build “something truly unique to Disney” within that universe.

Disney cites internal research showing 84% of families enjoy seeing familiar characters cross over between games and video content, a pattern it’s leaning into as games increasingly become, in Shoptaw’s words, the first place younger audiences discover Disney’s characters at all.

Shoptaw summed up the ambition simply:

A space that people can come play, watch, and create, and a space that we bring all of Disney together in one connected universe.”

With Kingdom Hearts now confirmed among the company’s billion-dollar franchises and a new mainline entry still without a firm release date, its next chapter is likely to be judged against that same standard.
