Job Listings Hint At Sony’s Next Push Into Game Advertising

Sony's PlayStation job listings point to a larger advertising operation spanning ad products, sales, partnerships, and campaign technology across gaming.

Story Highlights

  • Sony is recruiting for several advertising-focused roles within PlayStation’s Media Solutions division.
  • The listings span sales leadership, ad operations and technology, and regional partnerships across the U.S., U.K., and Japan.
  • Sony hasn’t announced where players might actually encounter new ads, and this is Sony’s fourth attempt at building an ads business around PlayStation.

Sony appears ready to turn PlayStation’s enormous audience into a more substantial advertising business.

Sony Is Building Out PlayStation’s Advertising Team

A string of PlayStation job listings suggests Sony is assembling the infrastructure and workforce behind a bigger advertising push. According to Digiday’s report on Sony’s hiring activity, the clearest signal is a global director role overseeing client partnership sales across PlayStation’s programmatic, FAST, and CTV inventory.

Alongside it sits a director-level opening in San Mateo to build out ad serving, targeting, measurement, and privacy-first data systems, with a team spanning the U.S., U.K., and Japan, suggesting global rather than regional ambitions.

A now-removed London posting reportedly described the unit outright as “PlayStation’s newly formed advertising organisation,” and a Tokyo listing seeks a sales lead to manage advertiser relationships. Together, the roles look less like routine hiring and more like Sony methodically building a sales-and-ops stack.

This Is Not The First Time Sony Has Attempted This

This isn’t new territory for Sony. It tried in-game ads on PS3 in 2008, opened the branded virtual world PlayStation Home the same year, and in 2022 was reported to be developing a private ad marketplace for PlayStation games. None of the three became a lasting business.

What’s different now, according to eMarketer analyst Jacob Bourne, is timing. Rising production costs and price-sensitive players are pushing publishers toward monetization that doesn’t touch the price tag, so advertising seems the obvious option. Sony isn’t alone in feeling the pressure: Microsoft’s Xbox and Electronic Arts are both building their own gaming ad businesses, even as Xbox cut 3,200 jobs earlier this month.

The opportunity is real by the numbers, too. Bourne notes gaming captures roughly as much consumer time as social video but earns only about a tenth of the ad dollars per minute, a gap advertisers may be eager to close.

What Could This Mean For Players?

The job listings don’t confirm specific ad formats or a rollout date, and Sony hasn’t said where new ads might appear. What they do show is a company rebuilding the sales and technical infrastructure needed to sell PlayStation’s audience to advertisers at scale – a prerequisite for any future launch, whatever shape it takes.

Sony did not respond to Digiday’s request for comment.
