Phil Spencer recently appeared in an interview with Famitsu during the Tokyo Game Show 2022, where he discussed the future goals of Series X and S in Japan. Phil cited, “Japan is a very important market for Xbox. We are happy that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are being accepted in Japan.”
Moreover, he affirmed that the latest consoles had performed wonderfully in their two years of sales. The Japanese developers have also increased on the platform. He stated, “The number of titles made by Japanese manufacturers that can be played on Xbox is also increasing.”
Phil exclaimed that the number of new Japanese users has significantly increased on the platform. He mentioned, “One of the things that I’m feeling very positive about is that the number of new users has increased considerably.”
This led to supply problems, mainly because of the recent pandemic. However, Phil also mentioned that the supply is improving soon, “At some point into 2023, I expect the Xbox Series X supply to improve. On the other hand, the demand is now at a record high.”
In other good news, Series X|S consoles sales have performed greatly in Japan and globally compared to the past renditions. Phil mentioned, “The Xbox Series X|S sells well, even compared to the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. This is true not only in Japan but all over the world.”
The Series S seems in demand due to its fantastic performance and relatively cheap price tag. He stated, “The numbers of users have increased significantly, especially for the Xbox Series S, the majority of buyers are new to the Xbox platform. More and more people are experiencing Xbox for the first time with the Xbox Series S.”
Phil recommends the Series S for uncertain times due to its low price and good performance. “The Xbox Series S is one of the highest standards among home video game consoles and can be purchased at a relatively low price, so I think the Xbox Series S is a good piece of hardware that fits the current times.”
Phil also elaborated on the popularity of Xbox Game Pass in Japan. He answered, “Yes. Xbox Game Pass is a powerful service and a big differentiator from other platforms. There are many users who are playing Xbox because they have Xbox Game Pass.”
The CEO is seeking chances to invite more Japanese developers to the Game Pass. “It seems that Japanese creators also see Xbox Game Pass as one of the places to offer their games. Over 100 Japanese titles are already on Xbox Game Pass. I would like to talk to other creators about such opportunities in the future.”
Phil Spencer is also looking to expand the number of users and regions where Game Pass is available, “I would like more people to play, and I would like to increase the number of regions where it can be used.”
In the interview, he also discussed how the pandemic affected the first-party lineup, which will improve next year. He mentioned, “From 2023 onwards, I believe we will be able to deliver a strong lineup. Please look forward to it, including the diversity of individual creatives.” When asked whether many games are planned post-2023, Phil Spencer hilariously replied, “Jesus!”
Furthermore, Phil elaborated on Xbox’s relationship with Japanese developers. “we have listened to the opinions of Japanese game creators and received their feedback, asking, “What is necessary for our platform?”. I think that improving it … leads to trust and leads to the release of games on Xbox.”
He continued, “I believe that this feedback loop will lead to an increase in the number of Japanese games in the future, and I am pleased with this trend.”
Phil Spencer also recently affirmed that the price of Xbox will not increase, and more acquisitions can be expected in the future. Moreover, purchasing every Series S in Japan will get you a 5000 yen gift card for a limited time.
These choices, alongside already established services like Game Pass, have increased the popularity of Series X|S among gamers by a mile this generation.
