Microsoft Has Raised The Price Of The Xbox Series X|S

The updated pricing only reflects in Japan.

Story Highlights

  • Microsoft has raised the price of both of its current-gen consoles, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
  • The prices of the two consoles have gone up by 7,000 yen and 6,600 yen respectively.
  • The updated price models are only effective in the Japanese region, and not in the United States or elsewhere.

Microsoft has taken the liberty to announce a new price change for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, raising the cost of the Series X from 59,978 yen (tax included) to 66,978 yen, with the Series S unit with 512GB storage seeing an increase of 6,600 yen, taking its total price to 44,578 yen. It bears noticing that the price change is reflected only in Japan, and American regions are currently exempt from this latest policy.

Microsoft’s official statement on the subject is that it “regularly evaluates the impact of changes in market conditions on local prices” and that “this change is the result of adjustments based on that evaluation.” The price change is set to be effective in Japan from August 15, so potential customers still have a fair bit of time to go for purchasing either console before the costs are deliberately elevated.

The Xbox Series S Black in 1 TB has also suffered a price change. After said date, that particular console will cost 49,978 yen in Japan. The introductory price for the hardware back when Microsoft launched it in September 2023 as part of its mid-gen refresh was 44,578 yen or 350 USD.

More Xbox Consoles Are Coming Later This Year

Microsoft, as part of its Xbox Games Showcase that went live in June this year, made three more Xbox consoles official, in case you missed it. These include the special edition Xbox Series X 2TB in “Midnight Galaxy Black,” the all-digital white Xbox Series X that eXputer reported on ahead of time, and a white Xbox Series S with 1 TB storage, similar to the aforementioned Carbon Black Series S.

In other news, you could say that in 2024, there’s no such thing as “console wars.” Xbox’s strategy has shifted entirely from what it once was a decade ago, with the industry giant now going the multi-platform approach by releasing a number of its games on other platforms, starting with Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves.

Let me know what you think about Xbox’s current plans down in the comments ahead. I’ll see you down there.
