Sony Drives Honda Car Onstage Using A PS5 DualSense Controller

CES 2024 was the best chance for Sony to show off its new Honda’s Afeela EV, and that it did. Sony Honda Mobility drove the car onstage during the showcase but adopted a novel approach that no one saw coming. The Afeela was driven with a PS5 DualSense amidst the applause of gamers viewing the event. The show also unveiled many of the car’s unique features, such as hefty AI integration that stunned the viewers.

Before proceeding, let’s address the elephant in the room. The ability to drive Afeela with a PS5 DualSense has been confirmed not to be one of the planned features. The feat was just used as a ploy to showcase the car’s features and compatibility with the gaming media. It was confirmed that the DualSense-controlled driving was for tech showcase only; we consumers can only dream about getting our hands on such a feature.

This remote driving demo is for the purpose of the tech showcase only. However, we believe that software can define new function and value. We want to redefine the relationship between people and mobility,” said the COO Izumi Kawanishi.

The wow factor certainly caused a stir within the gaming scene. It has led to many viewers gossiping about the electric vehicle in droves. As a result, some have also taken the chance to make dark jokes about the showcase. Many users have compared the event to the recent incident where a submarine was directed by a controller and later imploded in an unfortunate accident.

“The last thing that was operated by controller, didn’t end so well,” said the first reply on a Twitter post for the event. Many others chimed in with similar remarks as others were busy praising Afeela. Comments about stick drift in Sony controllers were also made. “Now stick drift will be lethal,” stated another user in the same post.

Jokes aside, the feat has impressed many because the Afeela EV includes a plethora of cutting-edge features related to gaming that make it stand out among the competitors. Some of the possible theme customization options for the displays in the car were also shown during the CES 2024 Sony event, including Fortnite and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Games can also apparently be streamed on the dashboard.

It is worth noting that a virtual model for the shown prototype of the car is also headed for Gran Turismo 7 later this year. It will arrive in one of the updates, but more details remain unknown.
