New Kratos Led God of War Game Confirmed Alongside God of War Laufey Release Date

A new God of War project led by Kratos has officially been announced alongside a release date for God of War: Laufey, which will launch on February 16, 2027.

God of War: Laufey Now Has A Release Date

God of War: Laufey received its release-date announcement at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, according to IGN’s report on the reveal. More importantly, the event also brought confirmation that another God of War project is moving forward with Kratos taking the lead.

Speaking to the panel, Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog said:

I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you’ll encounter are unexpected. Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next”

Laufey, better known to players as Faye, has always been crucial to the Norse saga despite spending much of it outside the immediate action. Her history shaped Kratos and Atreus’ entire journey, particularly the events covered in our God of War Ragnarok review.

The Kratos-Led Follow-Up Is The Bigger Surprise

A Kratos-led sequel was announced alongside the Laufey news. And Cory Barlog has confirmed that it will take place after the events of God of War: Laufey.

Returning the focus to Kratos opens plenty of narrative possibilities. Atreus left to pursue his own path at the end of Ragnarok, and his age and development became major parts of the Norse storyline. 

For Kratos, he is now leading the lands of Midgard as the new God of Hope and is helping rebuild its lands after the events of Ragnarok. But the events of Valhalla and some foreshadowing through the murals we can assume that his next adventure will take him to Egyptian mythology.

Kratos has already survived several dramatic reinventions, as our ranking of every God of War game makes painfully clear. His return is exciting, but until gameplay, platforms, and a release window emerge, cautious enthusiasm is the sensible approach.
