In a new interview with Days Gone director John Garvin, the God of War creator, David Jaffe, gave his insight about what he thinks about Kratos’ son, Atreus. He finds him to be “a terrible character” both in terms of visuals and gameplay (around the 2:13 mark). Now, David does not have a problem with him being Kratos’ son, but the way Atreus has been portrayed in God of War Ragnarok is something he disagrees with.
I also think that Atreus is a terrible character on a visual level and a play level. I like his function as a son for Kratos. That guy needed to be set up by the end of Ragnarök or the middle of Ragnarök to be like, ‘F*ck, that dude is cool, I wanna be that guy!’ And Ragnarök didn’t give us that,” said David Jaffe.
David says that Atreus should have been inspired by his father and acted more like him mid-way through the game. Instead, we know that he was quite angsty and immature at times during the story.
Some Players Think Atreus Acted Like A Spoiled Teenager In Ragnarok
I think it’s not controversial to say that Atreus is far from having his father’s maturity for now. However, some players think he’s too immature for someone whose dad is Kratos. Atreus had his highs and lows in God of War Ragnarok, but his impulsiveness rubbed some people the wrong way. Regardless, one still cannot deny the character development he experienced throughout both games.

While I didn’t specifically dislike his personality, his constant blabbering during puzzles also made the experience weird for me. Perhaps the next God of War project will nail down his character once and for all.
