Story Highlights
- Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the most iconic superhero games that came out more than a decade ago.
- According to a new rumor, the title has been internally greenlit for a remake in modern-day fashion.
- The decision, if true, seems kind of odd, since a new iteration in the franchise is more needed than a remake.
As far as the Batman: Arkham verse goes, IP owner Warner Bros. Games hasn’t really been doing it justice for a long, long time. We naively thought Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would switch things up for the better, but those prospects fell a little too short now that we’re several months into the “live service” shooter’s release.
That being said, a spicy new rumor circulating the internet as of late seems to be hinged on the idea that WB Games is reversing course. According to Vara Dark, a known gaming streamer, Warner Bros. wants to remake Batman: Arkham Asylum next. The project would include voice actors from Batman: Arkham Origins, which was when Roger Craig Smith voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne.
In the original Asylum title, the late Kevin Conroy took on the mantle of The Caped Crusader.
Warner Bros. recently spoke about franchises they’d like to focus on and DC, specifically Batman, was mentioned. The same sources that told me layoffs were incoming months ago (and were correct) tell me they’ve internally greenlit a remake of Arkham Asylum and will potentially be continuing the Arkhamverse with the Origins voice cast.”
Note: This rumor is just that—a rumor. Do take it with a pinch of salt, because Vara Dark has cited an anonymous source for the claim in question.
WB Games’ Recent Investors Call Houses An Interesting Statement
The timing here is seemingly uncanny because just about two days ago, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav affirmed that the company now wishes to return to its core franchises, which include Hogwarts Legacy, Batman, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat.
We’re through some of the worst — and it hasn’t been pretty on the gaming business — but we have four games that are really powerful and have a real constituency that love them, and we’re going to focus on those four primarily,” said WB Discovery’s CEO.
I have way too many fond memories of the icon that Batman: Arkham Asylum is today, coming out first all the way back in August 2009. It’s inarguably one of the greatest superhero games ever made, responsible for spawning a trilogy of like-minded hits that are still relevant to this day despite coming out about a decade ago.
However, I still feel as if a new iteration in the same vein as Batman: Arkham Knight is what this franchise needs more than a remake. In addition, Arkham Asylum is still a solid title, featuring a proper storyline, fantastic combat, and even satisfactory visuals. Not sure what aspects of the game could benefit significantly from a remake.
At this point, however, anything will go, as long as the project is fresh. The Batman: Arkham series has stayed format for long as is.
