Physical games are steadily losing ground, and NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro is not pleased about it. As platform holders continue shifting toward digital distribution, the acclaimed developer has expressed concern over what that transition means for game ownership and preservation.

Taro reportedly believed PlayStation would remain a dependable home for disc-based games. However, recent reports about Sony winding down physical disc production have left him worried about where the medium is heading next.

Speaking about PlayStation’s apparent move away from physical releases, Yoko Taro said he was “saddened by the loss of physical media.”

Still, Taro appeared resigned to the broader direction of the market, remarking, “That’s just the way things are going.”

That disappointment is understandable. Digital games are undeniably convenient, but discs provide something downloads cannot fully replace: a tangible copy that can be collected, traded, lent to another player, or preserved without relying entirely on a storefront.

The issue has become particularly relevant as console manufacturers introduce digital-only hardware. The all-digital Xbox Series X is one such example, while Sony’s modular approach has also influenced the ongoing physical-versus-digital PS5 debate.

Game-Key Cards Are Not A Satisfying Replacement

Taro’s concerns extend beyond PlayStation. As Level Up reports, he also criticized Nintendo’s game-key cards, which function as physical download keys instead of storing the complete game.

For collectors, that distinction matters. A box containing a license to download software does not offer the same long-term preservation benefits as a complete disc or cartridge. If servers disappear or access terms change, the “physical” copy may become considerably less useful.

This is precisely why Alan Wake 2 receiving a disc edition felt like such an important victory. Physical editions remain valuable even when digital distribution is cheaper and more convenient for publishers.

Yoko Taro’s concerns also carry extra weight because NieR: Automata remains a celebrated modern release. Games of its caliber deserve to survive beyond storefront listings and download servers.

Digital distribution is not going anywhere. But losing genuine physical copies entirely would still be a massive blow to ownership, preservation, and collectors—and Taro is right to be worried.
