The Last Night Director Finally Shares An Update After 9 Years Of Initial Announcement

After years of near-total silence, Tim Soret suggests The Last Night is finally approaching the finish line, nine years after its E3 2017 announcement.

Story Highlights

  • Tim Soret says he should be “out of a decade of sacrifice” next month, hinting at a major update to come.
  • He also said The Last Night’s themes have grown more relevant with time, even if it’s less “visionary” than at its 2017 reveal.
  • The game still doesn’t have a release date, nine years after its E3 2017 announcement trailer.

Tim Soret has broken years of near-total silence on The Last Night, and his choice of words suggests the long-gestating cyberpunk platformer may finally be nearing the finish line.

“Out Of A Decade Of Sacrifice”

Odd Tales director Tim Soret posted on X:

“Next month, if everything goes according to plan, I should be out of a decade of sacrifice. It’s about time. I’m just getting started. I have so much to offer to the world.”

It’s a striking statement from someone who’s said very little publicly about the game’s progress in recent years, and it reads as a strong signal that something concrete is coming soon, even without a confirmed date or details attached.

In a companion post the same day, Soret reflected on how the game’s themes have aged since its original reveal. “When The Last Night will come out, it won’t be as visionary as when it was originally conceived,” he wrote. “But we traded prescience for relevance. Thanks to the evolution of technology and social dynamics eerily matching the trajectory we envisioned, the setting and the story will resonate.”

A Long, Quiet Road To Get Here

The Last Night was first conceived during a six-day cyberpunk game jam in 2014, before Soret and his team unveiled it properly with a striking trailer at E3 2017, where it became one of that show’s most talked-about reveals.

Nine years later, the game still doesn’t have a release date, and Odd Tales has gone long stretches with little public communication. That silence bred its own rumors; back in 2019, Soret had to directly deny the project had been cancelled, writing that “any rumors of cancelation are untrue and frankly baffling,” while acknowledging the studio was “in a delicate position.”

Soret hasn’t confirmed what’s actually landing next month, whether that’s a release date, a trailer, or something else, but going from years of near-silence to a statement this specific is a meaningful shift in tone. After a long stretch of very little to go on, The Last Night finally has fans paying attention again.
