Story Highlights
- Many video games excel at telling stories, but only a few end up attaching you emotionally to their characters.
- Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are terrific examples that offer great immersion.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Witcher 3 also make you fall in love with certain NPCs.
All sorts of games encompass the far-reaching gaming sphere today, but let me tell you this here and now: Not every one of those is capable enough of telling a story with interesting characters that will grip you until the very end. Fortunately, I’ve experienced some amazing games over the years that don’t just excel at delivering on the story front, but their emphasis on character development is outright breathtaking.
If you’d like to read up on such titles, be my guest and scroll ahead. And while you’re at it, do check out a similar piece going over games that showcase the best character development for a taste of something different.
Some Games Are Just Built Different; The Following Is Proof
Flood the comments section down below in case you have a suggestion you think would perfectly here.
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
2023’s Game of the Year winner — and also the rightful conquistador of multiple other awards in the previous year — Baldur’s Gate 3 is perhaps the best example of the topic at hand. I’ve never seen writing and voice acting quite like this particular RPG, with the developers putting significant focus on character-building and the stories revolving around them. It’s a work of art, really, and one that should not be slept on.
eXputer reviewed Baldur’s Gate 3 and rated it 5/5, calling it “a testament to the talent of developer Larian Studios.” If you need help getting started, here are all the origin characters in the game that you should be wary of.
2. The Mass Effect Trilogy
While technically not a single game — you’ll have to forgive me for going off track here — I couldn’t help but talk about one of the best Western RPG trilogies ever made, with each iteration in the series curated to offer complete satisfaction on the end-user level. Trust me, the way this game deals with characters, you will have to play it to believe it because this is what BioWare was all about back in the day.
Anyway, the Mass Effect trilogy, being one of the most replayable sets of RPGs of all time, is bundled together with three complete games on Steam in the name of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. If you don’t want to pay the complete $59.99 for it, which although is fully deserved here, wait for a sale to drop in. Steam does not make players wait too long on this front.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt Red knows how to make games that rumble up all sorts of emotions inside the player. Take The Witcher 3, for instance. Not only does this RPG have an exceptionally well-made world design that is teeming with characters that feel “alive,” but it also introduces a range of characters that really start settling in with you as you go along the mainline campaign.
eXputer reviewed the next-gen edition of The Witcher 3 when it came out in December 2022, and rated it 4.5/5.0 for its impeccable quality. Author Huzaifah Durrani remarked,
For those who intend to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on next-gen consoles, the game is bound to offer an upgraded experience, with improvements such as an alternative camera, improved graphics, and quick sign casting.”
4. Cyberpunk 2077
CDPR pretty much slipped with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, getting off to a poor release where the much-anticipated RPG was wired to the gills with bugs and technical challenges. Who knew that a couple of years later, that same game would turn out to be one of the greatest open-world first-person shooters ever made?
Cyberpunk 2077 is what I like to refer to as a gorgeous nightmare, one that truly hits the nail on the head when it boils down to gameplay immersion. And as far as the characters go, the game will actively agonize you over the decisions you take as to not to hurt the relationships you’ve built with each character. Better not miss out on this one. I’m telling you.
5. Red Dead Redemption 2
One of the biggest creations of iconic developer Rockstar Games, a title like Red Dead Redemption 2 is found rarely in the gaming industry. This one’s got so much depth that it becomes hard not to dive deep into all that the world of the game has to offer, featuring a setting that focuses on the decline of the “Wild West.”
The reason this action-adventure has earned a spot on the list is because of its exceptional manner of making the in-game NPCs matter, intertwining different side quests so you don’t ever forget about the interactions you have with certain characters.
eXputer rated Red Dead Redemption 2 a cool 4.5/5.0 in its review, with the revised verdict iterating,
Even after five years, Red Dead Redemption 2 stands at the top next to new AAA titles, so it is still not too late to experience its greatness.”
