Good Character Customization In Games Is Just As Important

CJ in every game is a sacred tradition.

  • Customization and personalized cosmetics in gaming are important for the full experience.
  • Expert character creators, where you can make the most hilarious character models, are the real deal.
  • The cool drip and hours spent designing your ideal character make the game a lot more personal.

Video gaming, as a medium, offers a lot in one single package. We all go into games for very different reasons, and start to enjoy a game because it has what we’re most looking for. Some like the narrative, others the visuals, and the real guys prefer engaging gameplay. However, today I’d like to talk about something we all enjoy engaging with in some capacity, and that is character customization.

There are games that are pretty much living on cosmetic customization and personalized visual add-ons. Just look at Fortnite skin prices to get an idea of how lucrative this market is. CS: GO is also in the same boat. People love to get a “personal” feeling in games, and cosmetic customization is a way to do so. Whether you’re in it for the money, or just love to dress up your characters to make them look the coolest, customization in games is just as important as the gameplay sometimes.

Spending Hours In Character Creators

Speaking of character customization in games, it’s not just limited to live services or paid cosmetics in long-running games. In fact, I think the best example of customization can be found in single-player games, and that is the character creator. RPG games put a lot of effort into character interactions and side quests, and seeing a custom character you designed yourself interact with the game just hits different than a generic MC.

Admit it, you’ve spent more time in some amazing character creators than you’d like to admit. I remember back in November when I first started Where Winds Meet and went into the customization. I was surprised to see just how detailed and impressive it was. You can control and design each and every aspect of a character in some impressive modern creators. On top of that, there was an option to select presets created by other players, and if you open that tab, you can’t leave without feeling insecure and inadequate.

People had made such impressive characters that I was downright shocked. Not just that, but there were some hilariously accurate models in there, like Michael Jackson, CJ, Squidward, etc., and that’s what character customization is all about. More than creating a cool, good-looking main character, the real fun is to test the limits of how absurd and funny it can get. Some character creators are so in-depth that you can create comedic gold. You start tinkering with stuff, and hours pass by without you even entering the game world.

A Sense Of Control And Personalization

People care a lot more about this character customization than even the game itself, and I can relate to that. I’ve spent a fair share of my days in character creators, and it’s as addictive as it gets. Modern RPGs are pretty much incomplete without this sort of customization. Just look at Crimson Desert. It launched with a fixed MC, but soon added a custom character creator due to popular demand.

As I mentioned earlier, if customization wasn’t important, skins and cosmetic items in games wouldn’t be this popular and sustainable. I mentioned Where Winds Meet, that game’s whole economy is working on cosmetics. Games like CS have made people millions with their in-game cosmetic items. And even single-player gamers care a lot about this kind of stuff. Character creators, of course, but the feeling of discovering a cool costume in-game and showcasing that drip is unmatched.

This sort of customization appeals to our basal sense of feeling in control and truly owning something. Playing with characters you spend hours creating makes the whole experience a lot more personal and relatable. You connect to your own creations deeper than any pre-designed character, no matter how hilarious of an abomination you’ve made. Similarly, cosmetics let you control and alter in-game appearance just as you would in real-life. Games have a lot of factors that matter, and we can’t downplay customization.
