Baldur’s Gate 3 Withers: Role & Locations

Withers are an important NPC in Baldurs Gate 3 that offer many key services to the player if they have enough gold.

There are many NPCs in the Forgotten Realms, among which the mysterious creatures known as Withers dwell. My Withers BG3 guide will provide a descriptive overview of these entities with information like where to find them and what valuable services they may offer.

Key Takeaways
  • Withers are passive interactable NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3 that can perform different services for the player.
  • They are found lying in a Sarcophagus in the Dank Crypt.
  • Withers are used for Respec, Revival of fallen allies, and summoning Hirelings in BG3.
  • Attacking a Wither will not make them hostile towards the player.

What Are Withers In BG3?

Withers are one of the most mysterious passive NPCs you can communicate with in Bladurs Gate 3. Although they don’t naturally bear any ill will towards you, that attitude can change depending on how you have played the game. That said, they are still very cryptic and terrifying skeletons that seem like the type to kill you without a second thought.

Fortunately, they are passive, so it does not matter if you accidentally (or willingly) attack them. Withers will not retaliate in any harmful way. As they are a key part of the game mechanics, you will always be able to bring them to your camp for their services which I will discuss in the section that follows.

Role Of Withers

The Withers have three very important and specific roles that require their presence in your camp. In a later section, I will look at how to include these beings in your camp. However, listed below are the main functions or roles that the Wither can perform.

Respec Player Characters

Withers are key characters when it comes to the Respec mechanic in Baldurs Gate 3. Respec is an important mechanic in BG3 that is almost like a clean slate for your character. You can completely reset your character as long as you have enough gold and the Wither in your camp.

The reset goes as far back as the choices you made during Character Creation. This allows the player to try out different builds or simply change up their playstyle. Furthermore, you do not have to worry about any limit as you can Respec a character as much as you want as long as you have the gold. Keep in mind that the price for Respecing a character does not go up at any stage during the game.

Summon Hirelings

Additionally, the Wither now provides an entirely new service for the player. The Wither can summon souls called Hirelings that will help you in your cause. You will need to pick from among 12 possible species of Hirelings and pay for this service with gold.

Revive Fallen Comrades

The final service the Wither can do for you is revive your fallen allies or companions. However, like every service that they provide, the art of resurrection will also cost about 200 gold. Granted, you can revive your allies in other ways, like spending a fortune on a Scroll of Revify or just casting the Revify spell if you have the appropriate build.

Where To Find Withers In BG3?

With Withers’s description and roles out of the way, the only thing left to discuss in my WIthers BG3 guide is how to unlock these entities. The Withers are found in the Dank Crypt. You will encounter the Wither when completing the Explore the Ruins Quest in Act 1 of Chapter 1.

Talking to the Wither once will unlock him as an interactable entity in your home camp. You will always have access to him for any of the services he can provide there.

Dialogue Options

You will have to interact with the Wither at least once by exploring the Sarcophagus inside the Dank Crpyt. He will pose the question, “What is the worth of a single mortal’s life?”. You can answer this however you want; he will cycle back to the same question. The second time you should answer carefully as it will dictate the attitude of the wither. In my guide, I went with the “Depends on the Mortal” option, which the Wither found satisfactory.

If you do decide to attack him, he will not fight back but will immediately be available at the Camp for you to interact with again. There are no wrong interactions in this case, but some responses will definitely make the Wither think more highly of you than others.

With that, it is time to conclude this Withers BG3 guide. Hopefully, you found all that you were looking for in this guide. However, if there is something you wish to add, feel free to leave it in the comments below.
