God of War Ragnarok has several different puzzles for the players to solve in the game, and one of these puzzles is destroying the Heavy Vines. Some of these puzzles are straightforward, whereas others will have your brain gears running at full speed. Unlike normal vines, these vines aren’t destroyed that easily. If you got stuck at a spot with Heavy Vines and are wondering how to destroy these vines in God of War Ragnarok, here’s how to do it.
- In God of War Ragnarok, some heavy vines will barricade useful loot or a path that is required to progress the story.
- In order to destroy these heavy vines, you will need the Runic Arrow, which can be obtained from The Reckoning main quest.
- Now, aim these arrows at the vines and shoot them. Once that is done, equip your Blades of Chaos.
- Now, aim your blades towards the Runic Arrow’s sigil using L2 and then hold R2 to trigger a small explosion.
- This will destroy the vines, revealing the path ahead.
What Are Heavy Vines
As you progress through the game, you’ll come across a bunch of heavy vines that are covering a chest or your path to progress the story. Whatever attack you would perform on it would have no effect on those vines. At that time, you’d need to use a special combo attack to destroy the heavy vines. To destroy these heavy vines, you’d need special weaponry. It is the Sigil Arrows. These Arrows don’t need to be unlocked in a side quest or anything. As you progress through the story, you’ll automatically get to unlock them.
Destroying Heavy Vines
To destroy the Heavy Vines, you’ll first have to locate one of them. They are often found blocking the paths that further progress the story. Or you’d find them blocking the path toward a chest or a good loot.
Whenever you find it, you’ll find that it is covered with tons of vines. These vines are pretty strong, and whatever you do to attack them won’t be enough. Even using the Blades of Chaos won’t have any effect on them. As we’ve mentioned before, you’d need the Sigil Arrows. We’ll explain in a while how you can get the Sigil arrows. But for now, we’ll assume that you have acquired the Sigil arrows.
Using Sigil Arrows
When you get to the part where you need to destroy the Heavy Vines, that will be the time when you’ll get to test the skill fully. At that time, you need to follow the procedure on how to destroy the vines in the game.
For that, first, you need to aim toward the vines using the L2. Once your aim is towards them, press the Square button on your controller. With that, Kratos will command Freya to use her Sigil arrows on the Heavy vines. Once she has placed her purple hex on the vines, it is time for you to attack it.Now, remember, you can’t use your Axe here. That is because Kratos’ Axe deals frost damage. Since we’re trying to burn the Heavy vines, the cold won’t do anything to them. For that, you’d have to switch to the Blades of Chaos.
Once you have the Blades of Chaos, get close enough to the Sigil. Then, while holding L2 and aiming, press R2. Kratos will perform the Blazing Surge. If you were in the range of the Sigil, it would cause a powerful explosion where the Sigil was. That explosion is powerful enough to burn the Heavy Vines. What Sigil Arrows do is enhance your elemental damage. If you use the Chaos Blades on anything with a Sigil, it will make a bigger and more powerful explosion at that place. Whereas if you use the Sigil with the Axe, there will be powerful frost damage at that place. If you are stuck at a spot where your usual power attacks can’t do anything, try out the Sigil-enhanced attacks.
Unlocking Sigil Arrows
Okay, so if you have forgotten or didn’t notice, you probably have unlocked the Sigil Arrows. They are first unlocked by the 6th main quest of the game. The quest’s name is ‘The Reckoning’. In the quest, you’ll fight some powerful enemies. But it is when you fight the great serpent Nidhogg that you’ll finally unlock Freya’s Sigil arrows.
The Sigil arrows themselves don’t deal any significant damage, as will be shown in the battle. Freya will fire her Sigil arrows at Nidhogg, only for you to perform your attacks on where she placed her Sigils. When you attack that spot, it will cause enhanced elemental damage to that weapon.
Using the combo of Sigil and your elemental attacks, you’ll eventually defeat Nidhogg. So in that part of the main quest, you’ll get the Sigil. It will come in handy later on in the game. As you progress through the story, after a while, you’ll come across some heavy vines in God of War Ragnarok. These vines need to be destroyed for you to progress further in the story.
Again, at that time, you need to press L2 and aim at it, then tap the Square button. Freya will place a Sigil there that you need to aim toward using your Blades of Chaos.
Now you might be wondering what happens when you finally get Atreus on the team. Won’t he have access to the Sigil Arrows? When Freya meets up with Atreus after gaining the Sigil Arrows, she will give some of her arrows to him. That way, he’ll be able to place Sigil Arrows for Kratos to burn down the vines.
Destroying Normal Vines
You won’t always come across what will be heavy vines. At times, you’ll come across what is known as normal vines. Now, these vines aren’t strong enough that you’ll need the extra firepower that the Sigil arrows give to take them out.
When you come across such vines, you’ll only need to use your Blades of Chaos to burn them and clear your route. The chest or loot behind a normal vine would be much smaller than you’d get when you burn down the Heavy Vines.
So, if you come across any vines that your normal weapons can’t destroy, then don’t lose hope. It means that you still haven’t unlocked the Sigil arrows that are necessary to destroy the vines. Once you acquire the Sigil arrows, destroying these heavy vines becomes a piece of cake in God of War Ragnarok.
All you have to do is command your companion to place a sigil there. Once it is placed, Use your Chaos Blades to attack the sigil, and destroy the vines. Once the vines are destroyed, you can acquire the treasures hiding behind them. Or that the vines were covering your further progress in the story; you’re free to continue once they’re destroyed.
