The Avada Kedavra spell in Hogwarts Legacy will undoubtedly become a fan-favorite sorcery to use as it has had its fair share of iconic moments in the Harry Potter movie franchise. Unfortunately, it is worth noting the spell can only be unlocked if your character is Level 28 via a questline in the game. Meaning that you will most likely be grabbing the spell in the post-game events once you have cleared the main storyline quests in their entirety.

How To Unlock Avada Kedavra
The Avada Kedavra spell is often cited as one of the strongest sorceries that a Witch or Wizard can cast, so much so that even Harry Potter fans will want to hunt it down as quickly as possible on their first experience with this game. It is also one of the last unforgivable curses that you will learn as the questline is divided into three separate quests to obtain them and Avada Kedavra is the last one.
Thankfully, you can unlock it with ease as you simply need to follow through the third questline, and at the end of it, by choosing the correct dialogue options, you will be rewarded with the basics of how to learn it.
The quest is called “In The Shadow Of The Relic” which is initially triggered by completing previous Relationship quests belonging to Sebastian, your fellow Slytherin classmate, whom you can also alternatively meet in a Dark Arts dueling class if you belong in another House.
The previous two quests that you need to complete that pertain to unlocking the other two cursed spells we mentioned are called:
- In The Shadow Of The Bloodline
- In The Shadow Of Time
Now simply continue down below for a brief walkthrough of the “In The Shadow Of The Relic” quest which discusses its major objectives and important segments as well as unlocking the spell itself.
Meeting Ominis And Anne At The Felcroft Catacombs
The recommended level for the quest is Level 28 which is relatively where you’ll be towards the late-game but that honestly depends on your progression too and how you tackle the main story quests.
You will meet Ominis and Anne near the entrance of the Felcroft Catacombs as shown in the image above. Ominis will remark on how Sebastian rushed inside in order to unravel the dark sacrifice they need for the relic. Anne is worried that her brother has ventured too deep into helping him cure her illness which is why we need to enter the Catacombs and rescue him. Ominis will accompany you on the quest for a couple of segments here.
Traversing The Catacombs
Navigating through the maze-like passageways and corridors of the Felcroft Catacombs is straightforward enough as your first objective here will be to locate Sebastian. But before you can go straight to him, you will notice that the Catacombs are now crawling with tons of Inferi, and while you can ignore past a few of them, you will reach a large room where you have to clean them out in order to advance with the quest.
Use your strongest spells here such as Incendio and Lavioso to clear them out and make sure to not get overwhelmed here by their strong numbers. Upon defeating the Neferi, Ominis will mention how Soloman (Sebastian and Anne’s Uncle) threatened to report Sebastian if he found him dealing with dark magic again so he rushes off back to Hogwarts before Soloman does in order to make an excuse for this mess.
Continue onwards into the Catacombs and you should soon be able to spot Sebastian across a ledge where he has taken control of a couple of Inferi. But before that, make sure to build the bone bridge using your spells and continue onwards to talk to him and initiate the latter half of the quest.
Soloman Sallow Boss Fight
Before you can even properly talk to Sebastian about what’s happening, Soloman will show up and steal the relic from his nephew, banishing it and thus setting all nearby Inferi lose. The final step of the quest will be to defeat Soloman in a boss fight.
The fight itself is pretty self-explanatory because at this point you will probably be used to most combat encounters of the game, especially the one-on-one boss battles like we have here. However, the only annoyance here is the fact that you will have also to deal with swarming Inferi around you so we encourage you to focus and use your evasions timely in order to not get overwhelmed with the fight.
There is a rare chance that Soloman is also able to cast Protego which will provide him with a momentary shield from incoming attacks so make sure to break that whenever you’re looking to deal damage in short bursts.
The quests mentioned beforehand above in the “In the Shadow” series will provide you with two more unforgivable curse spells known as Crucio and Imperio which can also tremendously help here but feel free to use anything you wish to take Soloman down.
Receiving The Avada Kedavra Dark Arts Magic
Upon defeating Soloman, you will now need to leave the catacombs and rendezvous at the exit. Make sure to grab any crafting items along the way with Sebastian as you’re exiting such as the various scattered Horklump juice and the Stench of the Dead. Now the important step of the guide is that you select the correct dialogue options here which will allow you to learn the third unforgivable curse and dark magic; Avada Kedavra.
- In the first dialogue option, select “Everyone should know that curse.”
- Lastly, on the second dialogue prompt, select the “Yes, please,” choice.
Sebastian will now proceed to teach the player how to cast the spell, and by successfully pressing a few buttons in combination here, you will now have learned the Avada Kadvra dark magic to unleash on your foes and other deadly creatures of the game.
It is worth mentioning that although Avada Kedavra is overpowered, you can make it more powerful alongside the other two unforgivable curse spells by grabbing their Mastery Talents. These can further boost the potential of these spells, including the one we just grabbed, which is already so broken to use.

As you can learn from the following Subreddit Post, most of the player base was quite skeptical about how Avada Kedavra would function and whether or not it would be too overpowered to use in the game that it would ultimately end up ruining the fun factor. But thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case as it is fairly balanced with its long cooldown after using it.
Aside from that, the world is brimming to the lid with a vast array of activities to do as a school student as well as rich mysteries to uncover at every corner of the way. The Beginner’s Guide of Hogwarts Legacy will give you a headstart before you dive into the game for the first time. In addition to the Floo Flame Network allowing you to fast travel, you will most likely be excited to unlock and use the Flying Broom to traverse around the world.
