Assassin’s Creed Mirage Will See The Return Of Throwing Knives, And More

According to a YouTuber who previously leaked details of Assassin's Creed Mirage, the game will have many classical features returning

Ubisoft is home to quite a lot of influential IPs and Assassin’s Creed is indubitably one of their strongest suits. It has been almost two years since Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was released and since then Ubisoft has been quiet. Valhalla has received expansion DLCs ever since, with the latest arriving in March 2022. Dubbed Dawn of Ragnarok, this would be the last story expansion that the game would receive.

It was reported last year that an Assassin’s Creed title was in development. Dubbed ‘Assassin’s Creed ‘Infinity’ it would be a live service game that would emulate the success of Fortnite and GTA V. This is by no means a small project and would require a lot of time, and to fill in the gap before its release, it was reported by Bloomberg that to fill in the schedule before its release, Ubisoft was working on another project.

The project was said to be on a smaller scale than Infinity, would focus more on stealth rather than a large open world, and was actually an expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that was turned into a standalone game. It was also rumoured that Basim would be the protagonist. Since Basim was in Valhalla, this was no surprise.

However, a spokeswoman for Ubisoft said the company doesn’t comment “on rumors or speculation as they do a disservice to our development teams and community,” adding that they have “solid and exciting line-up of titles in our pipeline, both established brands with new story twists and features, and brand new IPs that will continue to change the landscape of today’s video games.”

A few days ago, French YouTuber j0nathan leaked a few details regarding the rumoured Assassin’s Creed game.

Exclusive info on Assassin’s Creed Rift by french youtuber j0nathan from assassinscreed

The YouTuber made quite a lot of claims. j0nathan said that the new game will be dubbed ‘Mirage’, will be set in Baghdad, and will have Basim as the protagonist. Industry insider Jeff Grub also claimed to have heard the next game would be called ‘Mirage’, a claim substantiated by Jason Schreier as well, further confirming the name and location. However, Jason Schreier believed that some details by j0nathan were incorrect according to his sources, such as the game having multiple cities to explore (the multiple cities part has now been revealed to be a mistranslation). The name was then confirmed officially by Ubisoft.

j0nathan and Jason Schreier’s reports also agree on the idea that Mirage will be a “return to basics” for Assassin’s Creed: a game focused on stealth, not RPG-style levelling and dialogue choices. The official art revealed by Ubisoft also seems to mirror the traditional hooded attire of classic Assassin’s Creed games.

Now, j0nathan has revealed further info in his latest video

YouTube video

He gave an English-translated overview in his Reddit post. He says that:

  • I confirm that Baghdad is the only city in the game BUT DIVIDED into multiple zones (4 normally, each with a boss). There will be desert, oases and rivers around.

  • Return of throwing knives

  • Return of the hiding places on the roofs

  • Lots of NPCs in the streets (the goal is to have as many as in Unity)

  • Lots of interactions for the parkour such as “lanterns” to turn around the corner of a wall or poles to reach distant buildings (example at 7:03 on the video)

  • Some assassinations will be in slow-motion (especially aerial assassinations)

These points line up with the ‘return to basics’ that j0nathan and Jason Schreier have talked about. Throwable knives, hiding places, and lots of NPCs in the streets were indeed features of the Assassin’s Creed games of old. In addition, j0nathan states that Baghdad is the only city in the game, but that it will be divided into multiple zones and each will have a boss. The game will also supposedly add new parkour interactions and features.

In the end, j0nathan states that these are all the little details that he has regarding the game and he will let Ubisoft reveal the rest on 10 September and that in a few months he will come back to talk about its script once he has more information regarding it. On 10 September is Ubisoft Forward, Ubisoft’s live stream event where it will reveal information regarding its many projects, including Assassin’s creed Mirage.

How many of the various leaks really are true, we will only know for certain when Ubisoft unveils Mirage in its live stream event. One thing is for certain, the very idea of an Assassin’s Creed game that returns to the basics of the series is very enticing for all fans. Although some of the community accepted the newer formula, many miss the old mechanics and wish for a game without the RPG elements and vast open world that were added from Assassin’s Creed Origins onward, due to lack of variety and meaningful things to fill the world with, which just makes it bland.
