Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Defends Starfield Team Against Vague Critique

The dev thinks the leadership is to be blamed not the team.

Story Highlights

  • Bethesda’s recent release has been under a wave of criticisms and comparisons with other games. The Baldur’s Gate 3 Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, took to Twitter to address one such post.
  • The former team lead for World of Warcraft, Mark Kern, compared the review scores between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield and said that the devs did not have passion for the RPG. Michael disagreed with it.
  • He says the leadership should be blamed instead of the devs who poured their hearts into the project. The RPG has also been compared with Cyberpunk 2077, causing one of its devs to speak up too.

Starfield has been under fire by a constant barrage of vague criticisms and comparisons to other titles ever since it was released. The Baldur’s Gate 3 Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, recently took to Twitter to address a similar vague critique. The former team lead for World of Warcraft, Mark Kern, compared the miscellany of review scores between Baldur’s Gate 3 and the latest Bethesda entry in the following manner.

The controversial figure pointed out in his tweet that the space-faring RPG has gotten the short end of the stick. He implies that the devs behind Starfield have not poured passion into the project, blaming the team that worked for multiple decades on it. Moreover, Mark thinks that AAA titles do not respect gamers’ time. Michael Douse called it a “really disingenuous oversimplification” and defended the devs that have brewed the RPG.

Baldur’s Gate 3 dev thinks that the leadership behind Bethesda should be blamed for any criticism and lack of “passion” instead of the devs that have seemingly poured sweat and tears into the expansive universe of Starfield.

I think he and I have similar views on AAA but it’s a leadership problem that shouldn’t be associated with the development teams who pour their hearts into their projects,” said Michael.

This is also not the first time Starfield has been compared with a major AAA entry in the industry. Recently, Cyberpunk 2077 lead dev also had to step in to curb the massive amounts of comparisons that were taking place between the hardcore Bethesda RPG and Cyberpunk 2077. The dev found it quite inappropriate for gamers to take certain features out of both entries for comparisons without providing any context or details.

In other news, though, Starfield has brimmed with success and milestones even before coming out. In early access, the title had already flocked a million users with only the premium edition owners. It also did not take long for the entry to gain over a million concurrent players after release. Now, the number has grown to six million players as the RPG becomes Bethesda’s biggest hit.
