Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden Features Real-Time Character Switching

The gameplay is seemingly looking improved this time around.

Story Highlights

  • Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is an upcoming third-person RPG by Don’t Nod Entertainment.
  • The game recently received a new trailer that emphasizes its various combat mechanics.
  • It seems players will be able to switch between Red and Antea in real-time combat seamlessly.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden appears to be a promising RPG from all we’ve seen up until now. The game features a complex narrative dynamic, putting two main characters in central focus, and building a complicated premise around them. As for the gameplay, Focus Entertainment — the publisher — just released a new Banishes trailer that focuses on combat and showcases some of the game’s features.

Single-handedly the most interesting part about this trailer is that it confirms how players will be able to switch between Red and Antea on the fly seamlessly during combat. While this may seem exciting on the surface level, it also means that combat is going to get challenging in Ghosts of New Eden, where certain enemy types are likely to require a well-grounded strategy from the player in order to be put down.

The footage also highlights the strengths of both protagonists—Red, the male Banisher, specializes in the banishment of ghosts and spirits while also being an expert in marksmanship. That is to say, he can wield a rifle, among other weaponry, and put it to good use with dexterity. Antea, on the other hand, is more on the spectral side of things here. She can use her abilities to scorch the possessed and lay them to rest.

But the best part is, that you can finish both Red and Antea’s combos by switching to the other character in a flash, enjoying the smooth transition in the process. I can already tell that the title will demand skill from the player in this regard, and some bosses will even go as far as requiring great synergy between the protagonists in-game before further progression can be made.

For those not in the know, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden takes inspiration from the relatively recent God of War reboot for its combat gameplay, with Creative Director Philippe Moreau iterating the following in an interview with PLAY Magazine,

We decided very early in the development to just begin a new fight system from scratch. So we took God Of War as the main inspiration, [particularly with the] game feel and how the camera is close to the character and [you] can move by strafing.”

Ghosts of New Eden has a release date of February 13, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It was supposed to be out earlier, but developer Don’t Nod delayed the launch to a better release window that’s not already cluttered with other anticipated releases.
