Bethesda Confirms That Redfall Will Be An Always-Online Game

Players will be needing an internet connection even in single-player mode.

Story Highlights

  • Bethesda has confirmed that Redfall will be an always-online title, both in co-op and single-player.
  • Bethesda has stated no reasons until now for the decision.
  • Redfall will be first-ever co-op title released by Arkane Studios and will go live on May 2nd, 2023.

As per the official FAQ page for Redfall, the game will be released in always-online form. Bethesda answered a community question on the page confirming that Redfall will need a “persistent online connection” whether you’re in co-op or playing in single-player mode. You’ll need a Bethesda.net account as well.

Where an internet connection is a must for co-op, single-player does not require any data transmission between the servers and the client and can be played offline. Games have long launched with an offline single-player mode. However, it can lead to piracy issues.

Due to single-player being offline, there have been issues like hackers breaking the security walls in the game and releasing a pirated version for free.

Because of that, companies have been launching titles with an online single-player mode to keep an online check-in. However, there came no official reasoning from Bethesda for this decision.

Arkane’s previous successful titles that we know about, Dishonoured and Prey, were single-player focused and were available offline. Other than that, its 2021 title, Deathloop had online modes for its assassin gameplay mechanic, but an offline mode was also available.

Bethesda has released the latest gameplay trailer for Redfall and with that, the company has also announced the release date. Redfall will be available on May 2nd for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

The game will also be launched on Xbox Game Pass as a Day One release. Moreover, Bethesda launched the official FAQ page for Redfall to answer the most asked community questions.

Redfall has been called Arkane’s “most ambitious game yet by director Smith Harvey. The co-creative director also in an interview with IGN, said that they needed some creative risk or change.

Redfall actually looks like Arkane’s most ambitious title yet as it is the first ever game by the studios that you can play in co-op mode. You can have a total of 4 players in the co-op mode geared up to slay some vampires.

So far, what we know about the game is that it is set in a post-apocalyptic town named Redfall in Massutusets. Vampires overrun the town after a scientific experiment gets out of hand. We follow four heroes with special abilities as they battle through swarms of blood-sucking demons through the streets of Redfall.

Bethesda is currently enjoying massive success owned by their rhythm-based action game, Hi-Fi Rush, developed by Tango Gameworks. Hi-Fi Rush has been by far a critically acclaimed title as it launched to a total 99% positive user score on Steam. The game also has reportedly outsold Forspoken on Steam by a mile.

Hi-Fi Rush was Bethesda’s first launched game following its acquisition by Microsoft. Since Hi-Fi Rush has done exceptionally well, Bethesda would be on a roll if Redfall passes the expectations. Apart from Redfall, Bethesda currently has Starfield in the works which again is a very anticipated title for 2023.

Anyways, what are your thoughts about Bethesda making Redfall an always-online game? Let us know in the comments below.
