The Persona franchise, formerly known as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, has quite the history to its name, dating back to September 1996 for its first-ever release. It’s an RPG-focused series of video games where a unique concept of fighting opponents with your “Personas” is involved.
The franchise has seen its fair share of evolution over the years with the most prominent change being pulled in right after the release of Persona 3. The latter introduced the concept of Social Links which is a simulation feature catered to the development of in-game usable Personas.
26 years, 6 mainline entries later, and a bevy of different adaptations later, the series, as we know it, has managed to sell over 15.5 million cumulative units as reported by Sega’s Japanese holding company Sega Sammy (thanks Persona Central). On a side note, the annual earnings report has shed light on the success of other Sega IPs as well.
The Rundown:
- The Persona video game series began its ventures as a spin-off to the parent Megami Tensei series and has blossomed into a ball of success.
- According to the recently released Sega Sammy Integrated Report 2022, the Persona series has had over 15.5 million units sold in total spanning a total of 18 editions.
- As for the parent company Shin Megami Tensei, the franchise has had a whopping 19 million downloads or sales in total with the vast majority of that being contributed by the Persona series.
Digging into the annual report, almost 50% of the total sales units come from Persona 5 Royal alone, thereby hinting at the overall success of the freshest entry in the series. It’s definitely no surprise that the developers are taking their time formulating the next franchise’s front-runner—Persona 6.
Moreover, 77% of those total sales are from abroad i.e regions outside the default launch location of the game. The expansive overseas reach of the Persona series has led to a beautiful development for the creators of the IP, and it further sets up the creative minds to appeal to this specific audience better than before.
The latest installment in the Persona series is Persona 5 Royal and evidently, this particular title has done it for the franchise in question. Not only is this rip-roaring IP set to make the top 10 list of games on Xbox Charts, but it even garnered 30,000 concurrent players in its first week, thereby breaking its predecessor’s record.
Earlier this year, it was sadly reported that there would be no save data transfer option for Persona 5 Royal between the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and other platforms.
However, if you’ve been remotely affiliated with the wide and bustling gaming community of the world, then you know how some enthusiasts don’t take no for an answer.
In relatively recent times, a Redditor discovered a working way to transfer your Persona 5 PlayStation save files to Steam, so that’s definitely something to look forward to. Given the wide playing audience of the game in question, we realize how some people are going to be very excited to hear about this prospect’s workability.
Do let us know in the comments section ahead whether you’re a Persona enthusiast and you’re happy to see your favorite game doing well. In the meantime, we’ll go catch up on some Persona 5 Royal action ourselves.
