Persona 5 Royal On PlayStation 4 Cannot Be Upgraded To PlayStation 5

"We would appreciate it if you could purchase "Persona 5 The Royal" for PlayStation®5 when you play with PlayStation®5."

Persona is one of the most popular role-playing game series in the world. The game is especially popular in Japan and has sold really well all over the world. So, expectations are always high when a new title in the franchise launches, and the same was the case with Persona 5.

It originally launched in 2016 and was an instant success for developers Atlus. Persona 5 received universal critical acclaim and the players loved the new game. Atlus even released a new and more updated version of the game in 2019 called Persona 5 Royal.

Both versions were massively successful and sold 5 million copies worldwide, which is a series high. Seeing this success Atlus announced a next-gen version of Persona 5 Royal due to release in October. But, we may have some bad news for the current owners of the game about this next-gen release.

Atlus has confirmed that you won’t be able to upgrade the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal to the PS5 version. In a new FAQ posted by Atlus Japan, the developer confirmed this once and for all. So, if you already own the current-gen version of the RPG, you cannot obtain it for free on next-gen consoles.

Persona 5 Royal
FAQ confirming that the game will not have a free upgrade

This is a huge bummer for the players of Persona 5 Royal as they have already spent money on two versions of the game. Atlus could at least waive this next-gen purchase for such loyal fans of the franchise. But, it seems like they are gunning for that triple purchase and expect players to buy the next-gen version of the RPG.

You can skip the next-gen version of Persona 5 Royal if you want to and still play it. The PlayStation 4 version of the game is fully playable on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility. So, you don’t need to spend the extra money and can just play the non-native version of the game on PS5.

Persona 5 Royal’s next-gen version is only seeing a physical release on PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Hence, it is only going to release digitally on the Xbox Series X|S with no physical release. The free upgrade not being available is disappointing but we hope it has a safe release in October 2022.
