Elden Ring Ray Tracing to Come Via Post-Launch Patch

Resolution, Framerate, and Compatibility also revealed

It’s no surprise that a game that climbed its way to the top of Steam‘s Wishlist has garnered a lot of attention. Gamers are looking forward to every detail that is being revealed about Elden Ring. Specifically details about its specs and compatibility. PC gamers are wondering if their device is well equipped to handle the breathtaking experience that Elden Ring is going to provide.

It’s every gamer’s dream to be able to play in the highest graphics while simultaneously having a flawless experience. Ray Tracing is confirmed to be a part of Elden Ring. That will turn this game into a gaze-stealing adventure. Though it is coming post-launch, it still leaves us wondering how gorgeous the gameplay is going to look. It feels like this game is hell-bent on trying to be perfect in every way. A Souls-like experience with next-gen graphics, bathed in Ray Tracing is something to be excited about.

In an FAQ article, Bandai Namco announced that Elden Ring will support a maximum resolution of native 4K, HDR, and frame rates of up to 60fps. Sadly, it looks like FromSoftware has applied a frame rate cap, as it did previously with its last game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Frame rate is usually capped in games to keep performance stable. Sometimes frames can spike causing performance to drop.

Below are the revealed specs as well as the compatibility options between old and new generation consoles:

PC:

  • Maximum resolution*: Up to 3840x2160P.
  • Framerate: Up to 60 FPS.
  • HDR*: Supported.
  • Raytracing (via patch): Supported.

Although, other important requirements (like GPU, CPU, etc) are yet to be confirmed.

PlayStation:

  PS4  PS4Pro  PS5
Maximum resolution*  1920x1080P  3200x1800P^1  Up to 3840x2160P
Framerate  30 FPS  30 FPS  Up to 60 FPS^2
HDR*                                            Supported
Raytracing (via patch)      Supported

The PS4 version can be shifted to PS5 and the saved data can be transferred to the newest generation. However, the PS5 version cannot be moved to PS4. If you port your PS4 game to PS5 and continue to play, your saved files cannot be transferred back to PS4.

XBOX:

  X1 (X1S)  X1X  XSS  XSX
Maximum resolution*  1600x900P  3840x2160P  Up to 2560x1440P  3840x2160P
Framerate  30 FPS  30 FPS  Up to 60 FPS^2  Up to 60 FPS^2
HDR*  X1 not supported                                    Supported
Raytracing (via patch)        Supported

Full cross-generation compatibility. The game can be moved between both generations and the saved data can be transferred.

Notes:

  • *4K and HDR require a supported 4K and HDR supported TV or display.1) – with Checkerboard.2) – with Performance mode.
  • Performance priority mode: alters screen resolution and load balancer to gain 60 FPS.
  • Resolution priority mode: load balance functions at a fixed max resolution, with a lower limit of 30 FPS. There are differences in the display of grass and other ground objects depending on the console device.

On the whole, Elden Ring coming to PS4 and Xbox one suggests that its lowest requirements shouldn’t be high enough for most PC gamers to handle on their devices. Let’s hope that PC requirements are revealed soon so we can get our devices geared up to immerse ourselves in the world of Elden Ring
