God Of War Ragnarök Reaches First Week Sales Target; Sells 3.5 Million Units

The game has matched the initial sales expectation Sony set for it according to an insider.

Saying that 2022 has been an amazing year for video games would be an understatement. Players have got to play so many terrific games since the start of this year. From Elden Ring to Stray, we have been blessed with excellent titles in 2022.

Last week, a new game joined this stupendous list in the form of God of War Ragnarok. The game is the anticipated sequel to the 2018 reboot of the series. Players had huge expectations from the title and until now it has been able to exceed all of them.

God of War Ragnarok has received universal acclaim from critics and fans alike with some even calling it better than the original. Another department where it is beating the 2018 game is sales. Ragnarok has been selling much faster than the original and has already matched its initial milestones.

Major Takeaway:

  • God of War Ragnarok has matched its initial sales expectation from Sony.
  • The game needed to sell 3.5 million copies in its first week and that has happened according to an insider.
  • It has received universal acclaim from critics and is selling like hotcakes.

According to an insider, God of War Ragnarok has achieved the first-week sales target that Sony set for it. Millie Amand on Twitter reports that the game had an initial sales target of 3.5 million units in its first week. The game has completed this milestone according to her sources.

Sony wanted God of War Ragnarok to sell 3.5 million copies worldwide 7 days after its release according to the insider. And the game has not let the company down if the insider’s sources are true. Keeping in mind other reports about the sequel’s sales, this seems plausible.

Chart company Gfk told the Games industry biz about how God of War Ragnarok sold more on its first day than any game in the series sold in its first week. It was also 51% more than the sales of the first game which was a huge success for PlayStation. So, all of the sales figures point to a historical opening for the sequel.

Another report about the title’s performance in the UK tells us how it outsold some huge titles. God of War Ragnarok sold more boxed copies in its first week than games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Elden Ring. Seeing how both of these titles are multi-platform and had huge success, this is an insane achievement.

Hence, it seems plausible that God of War Ragnorak matched the initial sales target set by Sony as Millie is reporting. The game has already been nominated for the Game of The Year award too. Even though it has huge competition, maybe it will win given its recency.
