Horizon Forbidden West Patch 1.17 Adds VRR And HFR Support

The new patch also brings a new balanced graphics mode.

Horizon Forbidden West is the rightful successor to the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn. The game dominated the sale charts worldwide upon release, and it has only gotten better with time. Horizon Forbidden West is among the best games to release this year, and the new updates continue to improve the quality of the game.

Horizon Forbidden West continues to follow the chronicles of Aloy and her quest to understand the machine-infested world better. If you are unfamiliar, the action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games is set in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by a rogue robot swarm. Hostile machines largely replace biological life.

Horizon Forbidden West’s last patch (1.16) improved upon the performance mode, pushing the graphics to a whole new realm of goodness. Now the Horizon Forbidden West update 1.17 is live, and it delivers support for VRR and 120Hz on the next-gen, alongside other enhancements and fixes on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions.

The new patch 1.17 comes with two widely-requested features – Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support and a new graphics mode targeting 40 FPS. Moreover, High Refresh Rate (HFR) support has also been implemented, which should improve the overall experience. The VRR mode enhances the dynamic resolution scaling in 60Hz mode. VRR and HFR support will target a refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz.

Furthermore, a whole new graphics mode has been implemented, dubbed “Balanced” graphics mode. The new “Balanced” Graphics Mode introduces 40Hz for supported displays. Players can now indulge in 40 FPS thanks to this new model. The mode will enhance graphical quality over the regular performance mode at 60 fps by sacrificing some of the fps.

Moreover, Guerrilla Games have asked the community to report the issues here, and they are tinkering with several of the problems reported by the community. It was stated that these bugs are not yet fixed in the new patch; though the studio is familiar with them, they are being analyzed.

The new patch should convey an overall smoother gameplay experience for hunting hostile machines. The patch is ideal for gamers who have compatible HDMI 2.1 displays, and screen tearing issues will be curbed by using the 1.17 patch.
