Although Killer Instinct couldn’t get the same amount of love as its Mortal Kombat, Tekken, or Street Fighter counterparts, it’s still an iconic fighting game franchise, with its oldest release dating back to 1992 for local arcade machines. Today, the game has gone past its 20th anniversary, and in light of that, has finally gone free-to-play on Steam after years of retaining this business model on Xbox consoles.
Last week, the developer Iron Galaxy held a developer live stream for the game on Twitch, going over future developments and immediate changes that are going to be a part of the title. Soon afterward, a blog post offering a rundown of the event was also pushed out, with James Goddard, the Game Director, addressing Killer Instinct’s player base in a heartfelt fashion.
First of all, on behalf of everyone who’s ever worked on Killer Instinct, I’d like to thank you, our community, for ten amazing years of KI. Your support has made it possible for us to keep KI going, and we’re proud to be here on the game’s 10th anniversary to give you an update that we hope will excite fans new and old.”
One of the most important changes that Iron Galaxy has introduced to the game is the removal of the Killer Instinct Definitive Edition, which was formerly the paid variant of the fighter title. With the older version out, fans will now play the Killer Instict Anniversary Edition, which comes with all 29 fighters, including Premium Content, XP boosters to level up more quickly, and other good stuff.

In addition, the PC version of Killer Instinct was previously paid, setting players back about $9.99. That has been replaced with a free version of the game on Valve’s famous storefront, but that’s not it. Another variant of Killer Instict, titled Anniversary Edition has made landfall on Steam too, and it costs $29.99. Those who bought the former Definitive Edition will receive a free upgrade to the latter, the dev confirms.
Killer Instinct’s initial release dates back to 2013 for the Xbox One, coming off as one of the launch titles for the then-latest console. 3 years later, the game was ported to PC. Now, on November 28, 2023, the title has received a next-gen patch for the Xbox Series X|S. On a side note, here’s our Killer Instinct tier list that ranks all 29 fighters, so you can know what character to start learning.
