Microsoft Xbox Rewards App Possibly Shutting Down In December

The app may get replaced with a more "streamlined" experience.

Story Highlights

  • Microsoft Xbox Rewards app could shut down in December to be replaced by a “streamlined” experience.
  • A user on the app received a bizarre message that revealed the new changes planned by Microsoft.
  • It wants to simplify the rewards and bring everything in a single location. We suggest taking the leak with a grain of salt.

Microsoft may pull the plug from the Xbox Rewards app in December this year. It reportedly wants to do it in order to “streamline” the rewards experience. As spotted and shared by the Xbox news reporter Idlesloth on Twitter, a Brazillian player received the apparently random announcement from Microsoft that announced the change.

The player saw the announcement after opening the Xbox Rewards app, which talked about closing it down entirely in December to replace it with the Rewards Hub. It will allow users to earn and redeem points without dealing with a separate app.

We recreated, simplified, and integrated the Rewards experience on Xbox, making it all about gameplay and the activities that players love most. With the new Rewards hub on Xbox, players will no longer need to have separate apps to earn or redeem Reward points,” reads the machine-translated announcement.

The reveal continues: “Starting December 2023, we will no longer publish offers in the Microsoft Rewards app on Xbox, focusing instead on new activities in the new Rewards hub.” The company wants to bring the change to simplify and streamline the rewards feature for players. In other words, all the Xbox-related offers and activities will be available in a single location.

The announcement also talks about slashing the weekly series after the end of November. It has raised some eyebrows because the removal of the weekly series is a shock to the community. The feature has been in turmoil after going through significant setbacks.

Xbox Rewards has been a staple by Microsoft and allows ample chances to win goodies —like the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription— by gathering points. However, the feature has been criticized for going through a slew of downgrades over the years. The points that can be earned by the app have been reduced over time, making it harder for Xbox users to fill their wallets with enough redeemable points to make a massive difference.

Some major changes could be planned for the Xbox Rewards feature. While the details could have been mistranslated, the dumping of the app has been stated in many parts of the original announcement. Additionally, multiple users trying to rediscover the announcement have failed so far; it was likely a complete accident. We implore you to take the rumor with a grain of salt until Microsoft reveals official details in the near future.
