Popular Japanese video game developer, Koei Tecmo, is seemingly planning to try out a new genre for their video games this year. To celebrate the anniversary of Nobunaga’s Ambitions, Famitsu recently conducted an interview with the founder of Koei Tecmo, Ko Shibusawa. A forum shared a quote from the said interview; the translation of the document reads,

This year, we plan to take on the challenge of a new genre.
We are planning to try a new genre this year, which we believe will offer a different form of entertainment.”

Koei Tecmo is known for making waves in the simulation games genre. However, It has also tapped various other categories throughout its history. They have developed turn-based games, action, shooting, hack and slash, fighting, strategy, and even JRPGS. They have worked on several popular entries, including Fire Emblem, Fatal Frame, Nioh, Atelier, and Ninja Gaiden.

The game Nobunaga’s Ambition helped Koei Tecmo establish its name in the simulation genre. The developers of Nobunaga, after the success of the title, made several additions to the franchise. Now, it consists of multiple installments covering different eras in history. Koei Tecmo developed a good number of simulation games that, include Aerobiz, Captain Tsubasa, Ciel Nosurge, and Gemfire.

Koei Tecmo seemingly did not seem to hesitate to try out several new things in game development. As a result, we can see them working on multiple genres. After the success in the simulation genre, they started tapping into various other categories, including historical RPG games consisting of titles such as Unchartered Waters, Ishin no Arashi, and Progenitor.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is Koei Tecmo’s latest game. The installment is a hack-and-slash RPG released for various platforms on March 3, 2023. The iteration has been received well by critics and players alike and even acquired a Metascore of 80. It’s unclear what this new genre will be at the moment, but hopefully, the company itself will shed more light on the matter in the future.
