Story Highlights
- Baldur’s Gate 3 is the mega-hit Game of the Year RPG by Belgian developer Larian Studios.
- Despite creating a masterclass title, Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirms the studio will now move o from the IP.
- Larian is now working toward its next big game that will supposedly “dwarf” Baldur’s Gate 3.
If there’s ever a Baldur’s Gate 4, know that Larian Studios isn’t going to be behind it, and that’s fairly sad, considering the heart and soul that the Belgium-based developer has poured into the IP. Speaking at a Game Developers Conference panel in recent times, Swen Vincke, the Larian frontman, has surprisingly let it out that the studio plans on moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons IP, something that Baldur’s Gate is a part of.
Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We’ll forever be proud of it but we’re not going to continue in it. We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4 which everybody is expecting us to do,” said the Larian CEO (thanks PC Gamer).
Additionally, Swen dropped another bomb at the GDC and confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be getting any DLC. According to him, the studio attempted to generate something of that nature multiple times, but could never succeed, because Swen considers Larian “a company of big ideas” where he just doesn’t see the developers working on DLC.
We are a company of big ideas. We are not a company that’s made to create DLCs or expansions. We tried that actually, a few times. It failed every single time. It’s not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very large.”
It’s certainly a melancholic moment for Baldur’s Gate 3 stans, that’s for sure, especially taking into account the vast potential of the game on that front. Anyhow, the 2023 Game of the Year winner isn’t the last of Larian that we’ve seen. On the flip side, the developer is working toward something that’ll “dwarf” Baldur’s Gate 3. A bold claim, I know, but hey, those are Swen’s words, not mine.
Baldur’s Gate 3 came out on August 3, 2023, for PC despite being in early access since 2020. In the subsequent months, the game also got ported to the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, ultimately earning eXputer’s 5/5 in the review while getting called “one of the greatest RPGs of all time.”
