Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Features Tribute To Chadwick Boseman

The "Wakanda Forever" easter egg in the game pays homage to Black Panther.

Story Highlights

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the mega-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, having released on October 20, 2023, for the PlayStation 5 exclusively.
  • The game has launched to terrific reviews across the spectrum, receiving praise for its vibrant open world, brilliant storyline, and over-the-top, seamless combat.
  • A new post has shown an easter egg in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that pays homage to the late Chadwick Boseman, known for playing Black Panther in multiple Marvel movies.

The demise of Chadwick Boseman remains one of the saddest deaths in history. The iconic role-bearer of Black Panther passed away at 43 due to lung cancer, having worked in multiple Marvel movies by then. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, players can find a touching tribute to the late movie star if they head to the Wakandan Embassy in the Midtown district and interact with the main door.

Though I haven’t tested it with the other Spider-Man myself, the following clip shows Miles engaging and paying the tribute. Head over to the Wakandan Embassy, therefore, and press the “Triangle” button when you arrive at its front. Miles will promptly perform the Wakanda Forever salute by making an “X” with his arms—the way it’s typically done and shown in the respective movies.

It bears noticing here that this isn’t the first time Insomniac has paid its respects to Chadwick. In the 2020-released Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you’ll find an entire street named Boseman Way in honor of the deceased Black Panther actor. In the previous iteration — Marvel’s Spider-Man — Boseman Way was simply 42nd Street.

I found another tribute to Chadwick Boseman is Spider-Man: Miles Morales. 42nd Street becomes Boseman Way between 1st and 3rd Street. Mr. Boseman’s big breakout role was in the film, “42.”

The reason it was this street that now pays homage to Chadwick and not any other is in itself another reference to him. A highly successful role that took T’Challa’s career to new heights was the movie called “42” which he starred in as Jackie Robinson. In addition, when the credits roll down for Miles Morales, the following statement memorializing our favorite Black Panther makes its way onto the screen.

In loving memory of a noble king, Chadwick Boseman. His honor, strength, and compassion will reverberate for generations to come. Wakanda forever.”

In other news, Marvel’s Spider-Man is finally out and as the world expected, it’s nothing short of a whopper. The open-world action-adventure has become the best-rated Spider-Man game ever, all the while acquiring Metacritic’s “Must-Play” label for that extra rep. In case you’re getting started, make sure to download that 1.8 GB patch that Insomniac released for the best possible experience on the PS5.

And for those not in the know, it’s been confirmed that Spider-Man 2 won’t feature the New Game+ mode on launch nor the ability to replay missions. Fret not, though, because the devs are actively working on these two features and plan on getting them out by the end of the year, as confirmed by Insomniac’s marketing director.

That said, the automatic puzzle skip feature is already a part of many of the accessibility functionalities that the game has arrived with. Stuck in a boring sequence? Pop open the pause menu and go right over it just like that—no problem. Some other major ease-of-access tools include being able to change the combat speed and reduce it down to even 30% of the full speed, along with steering and swinging assists.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20, 2023, for the PlayStation 5 exclusively. In eXputer’s review, we gave the game a 4/5 for its captivating story, engaging combat, along with hum-drum open-world mini-games, and questionable enemy variety on the flip side.
