Microsoft’s FTC Documents Mention A PS5 Superman Game

With great power, comes great- wait what?

                                                                             Story Highlights

  • According to an FTC document by Microsoft, Sony currently has a Superman game in development.
  • Microsoft was using Sony’s IPs as an example to prove a point that the exclusivity of a single franchise cannot drive console sales.

In an FTC document filed by Microsoft’s lawyers, a small tidbit begets the possibility of a Superman game on the PlayStation 5. When bringing up the potential of exclusive franchises being the driving force behind console sales or not, there’s a line referring to Sony’s major IPs. One of those IPs was God of War while the other significantly more curious one is Superman.

The full quote reads as follows,

This applies for “big” titles like God of War or Superman. There has never been evidence that exclusivity of one single franchise can drive console sales.”

While the statement itself is full of holes as both Microsoft and Sony have relied on franchise exclusivity in order to drive console sales. The most curious part is the statement showcasing the possibility of Sony having a Superman game under development. This could be and might very well be a typo mistaking it for Spider-Man, in which case it’s particularly interesting as Microsoft once turned down the opportunity for a Spider-Man game.

Before Sony, it was Microsoft who was approached to make an Xbox exclusive Spider-man title. It was reported at the time that Microsoft turned down the offer to make a Spider-Man title as they “wanted to focus on their own IP” which would prove to be…certainly an interesting decision if anything. Sony’s Spider-Man in 2018 became an instant hit and is now regarded as one of the best Superhero games since the Batman Arkham series.

However, the idea of a Superman game, especially one under the wing of a talented studio such as Insomniac certainly sounds supremely interesting to consider. While many cite making a Superman game as simply impossible due to the sheer power of the character, it’s exciting to think of the myriad of potential ideas that could stem from an actually well-made Superman game, even if it may not exist for now.
